Arne Slot has suggested Carragher is wrong about Matheus Cunha and now Liverpool should go and sign him

Liverpool’s forward situation heading into the 2025/26 campaign is looking interesting.

Arne Slot is blessed with quality player options to choose from when it comes to filling the three positions in his forward line, however, that could look very different by the end of the summer.

Darwin Nunez has been linked to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks, while it is being reported that Luis Diaz is unlikely to be offered a new Liverpool contract once his deal expires in 2027.

There is also the contract situation of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool as the Reds are yet to agree new terms with the superstar ahead of his current deal exciting at the end of the season.

Should two of these stars leave in the summer, Slot will need them replaced in his squad. The Dutch coach has praised Matheus Cunha ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Wolves at the weekend, so could the Brazilian star be an option?

Liverpool should consider Matheus Cunha this summer

Liverpool were linked to Cunha before the forward made the move to Wolves from Atletico Madrid in 2023.

The 25-year-old has been in great form this season for the Midlands club despite playing in a struggling team. The Brazilian star has featured in 25 games, producing 12 goals and four assists.

Speaking during his pre-Wolves press conference on Friday, Slot labelled Cunha as a ‘quality player’ which hints at some interest in the forward.

“Cunha is a quality player. He has the ability to play for one of the top five teams in England,” the Liverpool boss said.

This is a sentiment that Cunha’s Wolves manager Vitor Pereira shares with the Portuguese coach previously stating on Match of the Day via the BBC: “He knows in the future he can play for the best teams in England, but he’s committed with us.”

The Brazilian signed a new deal with Wolves at the start of the month, which keeps him at Molineux until 2029, therefore, a move for the 25-year-old will be expensive this summer, depending if there is a release clause in the forward’s new contract.

Liverpool should be considering a move for Cunha ahead of next season but that Wolves star is someone Jamie Carragher has doubts about.

Jamie Carragher has doubts about the transfer fee for Matheus Cunha

Cunha was the subject of a lot of speculation during the January transfer window with the Wolves star being linked to clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea.

The reported asking price for the 25-year-old was said to be £65m and that is a figure Carragher would not pay for the Brazilian star. “He’s a good player but I wouldn’t be paying £65m for him,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

Liverpool rejected a £62.5m offer for Nunez in January and if the Reds can bring that in during the summer for the Uruguayan, it could be wise to take a chance on Cunha.

The Wolves star fits the profile Slot likes to use in his number nine role as the Brazilian can drop deep to create chances for his wingers, can be used freely, and most importantly, scores goals.

£65m seems a lot for Cunha but the 25-year-old could reach new heights with better players around him and over time, Liverpool may even sell the player on for more than they acquired him for.
