First-Team Squad

Liverpool’s squad of 32 players has been built for the 2022/23 season at Anfield with world-class players at manager Jurgen Klopp‘s disposal. Their side includes four goalkeepers, 11 defenders, 10 midfielders and seven forwards, including any senior players away on loan. While the Merseyside natives also have one player on loan.

Liverpool goalkeepers

Alisson Becker

Liverpool signed Alisson Becker from AS Roma in July 2018 for £67m, which briefly marked the world record for a goalkeeper. The Brazilian has been Klopp’s No1 between the sticks ever since he arrived.

Adrian

Klopp signed Adrian as a free agent in 2019 to add depth behind Alisson as Simon Mignolet departed Anfield. But the Spaniard has seldom featured for the Reds since joining owing to his reserve status.

Caoimhin Kelleher

Republic of Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher joined Liverpool as a youth gem from Ringmahon Rangers in 2015. He has since proven to be Alisson’s understudy and a hugely promising goalkeeper.

Marcelo Pitaluga (on loan to Macclesfield)

Liverpool brought Marcelo Pitaluga to Europe from Fluminense in 2020 as a potential future star. He is currently away from Anfield after joining non-league side Macclesfield on loan for the 2022/23 season.

Liverpool defenders

Joe Gomez

Charlton Athletic sold Joe Gomez to Liverpool for £3.5m as a highly-rated teenager in July 2015. The centre-half has since developed into a squad player at Anfield between frequent absences to injury.

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool struck a deal with Southampton in December 2017 for Virgil van Dijk to move to Anfield for £75m. It was a world record fee for a defender but he has been among the world’s best for the Reds.

Ibrahima Konate

Klopp triggered a £36m release clause in the contract of Ibrahima Konate to sign the defender from RB Leipzig in 2021. He joined to be Van Dijk’s partner but injuries have limited the Frenchman’s availability.

Kostas Tsimikas

Liverpool brought Kostas Tsimikas to the Premier League from Olympiacos for £11.75m to give Klopp added depth at left-back. He has since proven to be a valuable squad player in the role for the Reds.

Calvin Ramsay

Klopp added a rising star to the Liverpool squad in 2022 with a £6.5m deal with Aberdeen for Calvin Ramsay. The youngster is still striving to establish himself at Anfield after an injury-hit first season.

Andy Roberston

Liverpool signed Andy Robertson from Hull City for £10m after the Tigers endured relegation from the Premier League. He has since emerged as one of Europe’s best attacking full-backs and received an MBE in December 2022 for services to football, charity and young people through his own charity.

Joel Matip

Liverpool agreed on a deal with Joel Matip to join as a free agent once his contract at FC Schalke 04 expired in February 2016. He is a superb presence on the ball but injuries have thwarted his career.

Rhys Williams

Liverpool awarded Rhys Williams his first professional contract in February 2019 after eight years in the club’s academy. The youngster is still establishing himself in the first-team at Anfield after loans to gain senior minutes at Kidderminster Harriers, Swansea City and Blackpool in more recent years.

Nathaniel Phillips

Klopp raided the academy ranks at Bolton Wanderers to sign Nathaniel Phillips in 2016. The Bolton-born brute proved crucial to the German during the Reds’ defensive injury crises over the 2020/21 season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool handed Trent Alexander-Arnold his first professional contract in October 2015 whilst their Under-18s captain. The right-back has since developed into being one of the best passers of the ball.

Sepp van den Berg (on loan to FC Schalke 04)

PEC Zwolle banked £4.5m when Sepp van den Berg joined Liverpool. He thought the Reds’ approach ‘was a joke’ at first and is still to settle in the first-team after loans to Preston North End and Schalke.

Liverpool midfielders

Fabinho

Liverpool secured a £44m swoop with AS Monaco to sign Fabinho in 2018. The Brazilian took Klopp’s engine room to another level with his defensive expertise superbly screening the backline at Anfield.

Thiago Alcantara

Bayern Munich let Thiago Alcantara join Liverpool for £25m in 2020. The Spaniard has often been a metronome at Anfield since with his ability to dictate the pace of games when he can avoid injuries.

James Milner

Liverpool signed James Milner in 2015 after Manchester City let the midfielder leave as a free agent. He is now one of the eldest players in the Premier League and a vital player to Klopp through his versatility.

Naby Keita

Liverpool and RB Leipzig agreed on terms for Naby Keita to move to Anfield in August 2017. The deal saw the Guinea star cost the Reds £52.75m in the end. But injuries have plagued his career on Merseyside.

Jordan Henderson

No player has been at Liverpool for longer among their current first-team squad than captain Jordan Henderson. The £20m ace also replaced Steven Gerrard as the skipper in July 2015. While he earned an MBE in June 2021 for services to charity after leading the Players Together initiative for Covid-19.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Liverpool beat interest from Chelsea to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal for £40m. But an array of injuries over the years have often plagued the midfielder’s career with the Merseyside club.

Curtis Jones

Liverpool awarded Curtis Jones his first professional contract in 2018 after eight years in the club’s academy setup. He made his senior debut a year later and has spent his entire career yet at Anfield.

Harvey Elliott

The Professional Football Compensation Committee ordered Liverpool to pay Fulham a record £4m for Harvey Elliott. He had left Craven Cottage for Anfield aged 16 at the end of his contract. Arthur Melo

Juventus sent Arthur Melo on loan to Liverpool for the 2022/23 term for £4m with a £32.5m option to buy. But the Brazilian tore a muscle in his thigh within weeks of joining the Premier League team.

Liverpool secured what may prove to be a bargain £225k move for Stefan Bajcetic as a 16-year-old at Celta Vigo. The Spaniard made his senior debut in 2022 and soon emerged as a key first-team player.

Liverpool forwards

Roberto Firmino

The 2022/23 season is Roberto Firmino’s last term with Liverpool after electing to leave at the end of his contract. The Brazilian has enjoyed a vastly successful career at Anfield since joining for £29m. He has scored more than 100 goals and laid on in excess of 75 assists over more than 350 appearances.

Mohamed Salah

AS Roma sold Mohamed Salah to Liverpool for £34m two years after the winger left Chelsea. While the Egyptian struggled at Stamford Bridge, he has become a modern-day Premier League icon over his time at Anfield. The attacker has penned over 125 goals and in excess of 50 assists in over 200 matches.

Cody Gakpo

Among the newest faces at Liverpool includes Cody Gakpo following a £44m switch in January 2023. He lit up the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the Netherlands as a prodigious and dynamic attacking threat.

Diogo Jota

Wolves sold Diogo Jota to Liverpool for £45m in 2020 but Ki-Jana Hoever moved the other way. The Portuguese has enjoyed a strong career at Anfield so far but injuries have restricted his availability.

Luis Diaz

Darwin Nunez

Chaos and confusion have been the tone for Darwin Nunez as a Liverpool player. Klopp paid Benfica a potential club-record £85m for the Uruguay forward who cuts a perplexing presence in the attack.

Fabio Carvalho

Liverpool and Fulham finalised an initial £5m transfer for Fabio Carvalho in April 2022 after talks over an £8.5m deal fell through that January. The youngster has since held a peripheral role under Klopp.
