The latest news, rumours, opinions and updates about former Liverpool defender Joel Matip from Rousing The Kop. Matip is one of the Reds’ greatest-ever free transfers after moving to Anfield in a Bosman deal in July 2016, having agreed to a pre-contract ahead of leaving FC Schalke 04.
Matip was largely underrated during his career on Merseyside after offering the Reds a key defensive presence, alongside iconic forward forays. The Cameroonian made his Liverpool debut in August 2016 at Burton Albion in the EFL Cup. But injuries often limited Matip’s role before leaving Liverpool as a free agent in June 2024.
