Wataru Endo has insisted that Joel Matip had an ‘amazing’ game for Liverpool against Tottenham today.

Matip was the man who unfortunately put through his own goal to hand the Reds their first defeat of the season in North London.

But speaking to LFCTV after the game, Endo said that the 32-year-old should be proud of his overall performance in difficult circumstances.

“Actually, he [Matip] played an amazing game today so no one can say something to him,” said the Japan captain.

“I am so proud of what he did today and I am so proud of what my teammates did today.”

Endo offers Matip support

Matip has every reason to be proud of himself after an excellent display in trying circumstances. Yes, he ultimately cost Liverpool a well-earned point, but it was pure bad luck, nothing else.

If we’re going to nit-pick, then perhaps a red shirt could have got out quicker to stop the cross from Pedro Porro. But once it flashed across the box, Matip had to get something on it.

That he did so and diverted the ball into Alisson Becker’s top corner was simply unlucky.

As for Endo, he too deserves credit for coming on and solidifying the Reds after going down to nine men.

Again though, if we’re going to nit-pick, we’re not sure what the Japanese was doing pressing in the Spurs box with 95 minutes on the clock.

Having been played around, Tottenham then got up the pitch and created the space for Porro to fire into Matip.

No blame should be attached to Endo or to Matip, but these little moments can end up making all the difference. And so it proved tonight. Heads up, boys.
