Jarell Quansah has admitted that he had his eye on a starting spot for Liverpool before the season even started.

Quansah put in another excellent display for the Reds tonight. The 20-year-old was comfortably Liverpool’s best player in a disappointing 2-1 loss against Union Saint-Gilloise.

It was a big night for Jarell, as he bagged his first goal for the Reds. And speaking to LFCTV after the game, the centre-back admitted that he had been ready for chances to come his way this year. Even if it was at the expense of some of his more senior teammates.

“At the start of the season when I’ve stayed and not gone on-loan I thought I want to play in these games,” Quansah explained.

“So obviously, it’s a shame what happened to Joel [Matip] and my condolences go to him, but my idea was to try and get over him anyway and try and be a starting centre-back in the Premier League.

“I’m just trying to push on and be the best centre-back I can be.”

Quansah backs himself

Quansah sounds like he was just about the only person of a Liverpool persuasion who saw his boom in minutes coming this season.

Ever the meticulous planner, even Jurgen Klopp has admitted to being ‘surprised’ by the youngster’s progress.

But this game time isn’t now coming Quansah’s way by accident. The England U21 international clearly has a very solid belief in his own game.

That self-confidence is evident in the way Jarell plays the game. He doesn’t look like a young man overawed by much.

Even tonight with his goal, a lot of centre-backs would have panicked having had the space to take the ball down in the penalty box.

But Jarell took one beautiful touch to steady himself, before piling a second one past the goalkeeper. Not a bad way to get your first senior goal.

In terms of the Matip comment, it might come off ever so slightly crass given the circumstances. But that’s perhaps a slight lack of experience in-front of the cameras coming through.

Nevertheless, even if Matip were currently fit. It isn’t a stretch to say that Quansah would deserve to be picked anyway. He’s seriously been that good. Keep it up, Jarell!
