Jurgen Klopp has praised the performance of Joel Matip today, despite his last-second own goal.

Matip was the unfortunate villain of Saturday’s loss against Tottenham Hotspur, prodding Pedro Porro’s cross into his own goal in the final minute of injury time.

But according to his manager via BBC Sport the 32-year-old was incredibly unlucky after a superb display.

“It looks a bit like destiny or someone had to put the foot there,” rued the manager. “Joel defended outstandingly well today. He put the foot out and it goes in the goal.

“There are worse things in life. That is how it is.”

Klopp backs Matip

Having had so much go against his team today, Klopp was unbelievably calm when speaking to the press after the game.

To be honest, given how Liverpool actually played today at Spurs, that should give every Reds fans enormous belief.

This wasn’t a game that the Reds were overrun in and lost to a last minute moment of misfortune. It was one that they were completely in – and very capable of winning- even with nine men.

The performances of pretty much all of Klopp’s men today points to a bright season for Liverpool. He’s right not to be too down;.

As for Matip, perhaps he’ll need an arm or two around the shoulder this evening. The 32-year-old has had a really good start to the season, but has been undone by a cruel, cruel moment,.

This is football though, and these things happen. Thankfully Matip has been around long enough to know that.

Head up big man, and thank you for a terrific display for 95 minutes…
