Liverpool’s right-back conundrum explained as Arne Slot makes frank Jeremie Frimpong admission

Liverpool’s right-back position has had a question mark over it since the start of the 2025-26 season.

Jeremie Frimpong was the first of all Liverpool’s signings in the summer, with most fans thinking the £35million defender would be Slot’s first-choice.

That is, despite Conor Bradley also being among his ranks with the Northern Ireland international having played second-fiddle to Trent Alexander-Arnold for the last few years.

Both players are equally good, with both of them being more effective in attack rather than in defence.

However, despite both being usable options, aside from when they were injured, of course, Dominik Szoboszlai was still the one chosen by the Dutchman to face Galatasaray on Tuesday.

And now, with both right-backs ready to be involved in games, Slot has shared his thoughts on the position and what Bradley and Frimpong must do.

Arne Slot still doesn’t think Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong can play every Liverpool game each week

Right-back has been an area of Liverpool’s team that has felt a bit like a weakness this season.

Indeed, when Szoboszlai was initially played there at the start of the season, he was among the Reds’ best players.

However, against Galatasaray, it was a completely different story, with the Hungarian even giving away the penalty that won the Super Lig club the game.

Since then, fans have questioned why Slot chose to start Frimpong on the right wing rather than at right-back, with the Dutchman admitting he’d be “surprised” if players started to complain about a lack of game time when just returning from an injury.

“I don’t think so [that Bradley and Frimpong are getting frustrated] at the moment,” he said in his pre-Chelsea press conference.

“Conor Bradley has been out with an injury in pre-season that brought him into the season with an injury, and Jeremie Frimpong the same.

“He’s been out with an injury as well, so I would be surprised if players are complaining that they don’t play if they are injured; that would be something new to me.

“They’ve came back from their injuries, but like Alexander Isak, we don’t believe it’s possible that if you’ve been out for three or four weeks with an injury, that you can play three or four games in a week.”

Liverpool must beat Chelsea in their Premier League clash on Saturday

Liverpool are gearing up to face Chelsea in their last game before the international break.

Apart from their last week of fixtures, Slot’s men have been fairly impressive, with the club currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool may be seen as favourites for their game against Chelsea, but if their games against teams such as Burnley and Arsenal are anything to go by, the clash will be anything but a walk in the park.

Granted, Chelsea haven’t been in the best run of form themselves, but with players such as Joao Pedro leading their line, it would be surprising to see Liverpool being able to cruise to a win.

If they don’t beat the Blues on Saturday, it could give Arsenal the chance to take first place in the Premier League, and that won’t be something they’d easily give up.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen, but for now, it feels like Slot is going to have to throw everything in his power to beat Maresca’s men on Saturday.
