Phil Thompson says Dominik Szoboszlai kept doing something vs Galatasaray that was so ‘frustrating’

Liverpool have been well below par over the last few weeks.

In fact, they’ve performed below the standards expected of them since the start of the season.

However, due to the sheer number of late goals that they scored at the start of the campaign, their poor performances were masked.

Of course, some players, such as Dominik Szoboszlai, were in decent form, but even he has managed to lose his mojo in the last couple of games.

Phil Thompson was left frustrated at the poor corners that Dominik Szoboszlai was putting in

A couple of weeks ago, Szoboszlai was being dubbed a “revelation” by Jamie Carragher.

Now, however, things seem to have taken a 180-degree turn with the Hungarian performing well below his usual standards.

He has been played across most areas of the pitch this season, and although he did well at right-back at the start of the term, Tuesday’s game against Galatasaray proved that it wasn’t a worthwhile experiment.

And, while speaking on the Official Liverpool FC Podcast, Phil Thompson gave an insight into an area of Szoboszlai’s game that he felt rather “frustrated” by.

“I think it’s a good point, you need to put them [corners] on the money all the time. If I can remember the first three corners, I don’t think Dominik got them past the first man, which was frustrating,” he said.

“And then the one from the other side then, I think it’s the one you were talking about, Ibu should just be glancing it and has got a full forehead on it.

“It was just 27 crosses, you’ve got to be doing better. You’ve got to have more chances to score if you’re having 27 crosses.”

Liverpool must shore up their ranks against Chelsea on Saturday

Although Chelsea haven’t played the best themselves, that doesn’t mean it won’t be an entertaining battle.

Joao Pedro has started the 2025-26 season off well, with the Brazilian being Enzo Maresca’s main attacking outlet.

Of course, Cole Palmer has had the odd say on things, but fortunately for the Reds, the Englishman has been ruled out of the clash due to injury.

Although Palmer being absent is a boost for Liverpool, the fact that they’ll be starting Ibrahima Konate is a cause for concern.

The Frenchman has been poor for Liverpool this season, with most fans not feeling confident with him in their back four.

So, if Slot doesn’t figure out why his team can’t hold onto a lead or create any chances, things could turn sour at Anfield sooner than most think.
