Bayern Munich president gives update on Joshua Kimmich’s future after Liverpool make move behind the scenes

The summer transfer window looks set to be a busy one for Liverpool.

The previous two windows under Arne Slot have been very quiet with Liverpool only adding Federico Chiesa to their squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

In hindsight, this has worked out for the Reds as Slot has been allowed a season to assess his squad and any additions this summer will be exactly what the Dutch coach feels he needs.

The Merseyside club will also have money to spend and have already been linked to several stars in previous weeks. Joshua Kimmich is a name Liverpool are interested in and have made contact with his representatives to enquire about a potential deal.

The German star is out of contract at Bayern Munich at the end of the season and the Bundesliga club’s president has provided a significant update on the 30-year-old’s situation.

Bayern Munich confident of keeping Joshua Kimmich

Kimmich would help solve two problems at Liverpool as the German international can play at right-back and in the number six position.

The Reds have been in the market for a new number six since last summer, while Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to be linked to Real Madrid as the full-back is yet to agree a new contract at Anfield.

Despite being 30, the signing of Kimmich makes sense, but Liverpool’s hopes of luring the midfielder to Merseyside may have been dealt a blow by Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer.

Speaking to BR24, Hainer has admitted that he is optimistic that Kimmich will remain with the Bundesliga giants next season, but it is a decision the player has to make.

“I’m cautiously optimistic on Kimmich signing new deal with us,” the Bayern president stated. “In the end, he has to decide, but I think he knows what everyone has in FC Bayern. We are showing our ambition and project.”

Kimmich presents Liverpool with the ideal replacement for Alexander-Arnold should he leave as Kimmich ticks plenty of boxes.

However, there are also reasons why the Reds board will be turned off the German star, hence, why the Merseyside club are unlikely to make a move.

Joshua Kimmich to Liverpool is unlikely this summer

Being a free agent will be the main reason why clubs around Europe will be attracted to Kimmich but Liverpool are likely to look beyond that.

Being 30 will be a major turn-off for the Reds as the Premier League leaders very rarely sign players this late in their careers.

The Bayern star will also demand big wages as a result of his free-agent status, another sensitive topic at Anfield, as Liverpool continue to try and sort out the contract situations of many of their current stars.

These two areas alone will be enough to make Liverpool’s board question a move going off how they have done business in the past, but when it comes to Kimmich, this way of doing things may need to be reassessed short-term.
