Liverpool could be in the market for both a new right-back and another midfield option during the summer transfer window.
The Reds are preparing for the possibility of losing Trent Alexander-Arnold after almost eight uninterrupted years in the first-team.
Meanwhile, despite the brilliance of Ryan Gravenberch this season, there remains a feeling that Arne Slot is keen to bolster the Liverpool midfield.
Although there are several players out there who will be of interest to the Reds in either position, a chance is tentatively opening up to get one who can play both.
Joshua Kimmich has filled both roles expertly over the last decade with Bayern Munich. And as Kimmich edges closer to the end of his contract with the German giants, Liverpool are keeping an eye on his situation.
With mere months left on the 30-year-old’s deal in Munich, journalist Graeme Bailey has given the latest on what’s going on between Kimmich and Liverpool.

Liverpool in touch over Joshua Kimmich transfer
Kimmich would not necessarily be a signing straight out of the Michael Edwards and FSG playbook. However, it is not every day a player like the Germany international comes onto the market.
And speaking exclusively to Rousing The Kop, Bailey suggests that a sense of opportunism is driving Liverpool’s interest.
“Liverpool have talked to his people, we know he’s a player they’ve liked for a long, long time,” says the journalist.
“Bayern are still very hopeful he stays but Barcelona and Hansi Flick like him a lot as well.”
“Liverpool are just touching base, assessing the situation, I think it’s more about keeping informed at the moment. There’s work being done on it, they like him but they’re not alone in that.
“I don’t think he’s a huge priority but when players of that quality become available on free transfers it’s an interesting area for them to look at,” Bailey adds. “The player is assessing his options.”
How has Kimmich been playing this season?
Liverpool do have some form for taking a cut-price, slightly ageing midfielder from Bayern Munich. After the way Thiago Alcantara’s Reds career went, though, they would be brave to do it again.
Nevertheless, Kimmich does not have the injury record Thiago did, having played 422 times for Bayern since joining in 2015.
| Appearances | Goals | Assists | Tackles Won | Duels Won | Chances Created | |
| Joshua Kimmich Bundesliga 24/25 | 21 | 1 | 5 | 57.6% | 65.0% | 57 |
This season, he has once again been key to the German record champions as they aim to snatch back the Bundesliga title.
Kimmich has not missed a minute under Vincent Kompany in the league or Champions League this season, starting and finishing all 29 matches.
That bodes well if Kimmich does decide to move on at the end of the campaign, when a transfer to Liverpool remains a possibility.
