What’s expected to happen with Darwin Nunez in the transfer market this summer as Liverpool set stance

Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool career is hanging by a thread.

The Uruguayan forward has struggled at Anfield this season as Arne Slot has preferred Luis Diaz in the number nine role in his team over the natural striker.

Nunez has featured in 29 games for the Reds this season, producing six goals and four assists, while not being a regular starter.

Liverpool paid around £85m Benfica for Nunez and that transfer fee has provided the basis for what fans of the Merseyside club are expecting from the 25-year-old.

In his time at Anfield, Nunez has frustrated fans with his finishing ability, decision-making in the final third and his tendency to run offside.

Nunez has set a new goal at Liverpool for the remainder of the season to break into Slot’s starting 11, but if he fails to do so, that could be the end of his career with the Premier League leaders.

Jamie Carragher thinks Nunez will not be at Liverpool next season and if that is the case, there will be plenty of clubs lining up for the chaotic number nine.

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has plenty of transfer interest ahead of the summer window

Nunez has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia this month as uncertainty over his Liverpool future remains.

Fabrizio Romano has stated that Saudi clubs are obsessed with Nunez and would love to bring the Uruguayan start to the Middle East this summer, alongside Mohamed Salah.

That will be an option for the 25-year-old should he decide to leave the Reds and according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, there is expected to be a significant market for the Uruguayan in the summer, if Liverpool choose to sell the striker.

Nunez is still considered an important part of Slot’s squad as they compete for major honours throughout the second half of this season, with the Premier League leaders having no interest in selling the star in January, despite interest from Al-Nassr.

The remainder of the 2024/25 campaign looks like it could be the last chance saloon for Nunez at Liverpool but that doesn’t mean the forward cannot go on to have a successful career elsewhere.

Where could Darwin Nunez continue his career amid Liverpool exit talk?

Alan Shearer described Darwin Nunez as ‘very erratic’ at one point this season and that is a trait the striker can benefit from. The 25-year-old has incredible pace and causes chaos in the final third with his physicality, however, his other skills need to be honed.

At 25, it would be a shame to see the Uruguay international move to Saudi Arabia as the forward is more than capable of playing in Europe for many more years.

Should Alexander Isak leave Newcastle this summer, St James’ Park could be an option for Nunez. West Ham are also in need of a striker and the likes of Eddie Howe and Graham Potter could be great for the Liverpool star’s career.

Outside of England, AC Milan have shown interest in Nunez, with the Serie A club in the mix should the 25-year-old leave Anfield this summer.

Being a Spanish speaker, La Liga will always be an attraction for the Uruguayan star, although there will be a lack of clubs interested in the striker as many of the teams that may be interested are unlikely to be able to afford the Liverpool forward.

It is a crucial time for Nunez’s career, and everyone associated with Liverpool hopes he can thrive throughout the rest of the season, as the Uruguayan star has the potential to be a great asset to the club.
