Liverpool have the chance to keep the feel-good factor going on Tuesday as they face Lille in the Champions League.

The Reds could easily have been going into their seventh European game of the season on the back of a third successive draw in the Premier League.

That they instead bounce into it after recording a first league win of 2025 is largely thanks to Darwin Nunez.

Nunez was not the only reason for Liverpool’s two late goals against Brentford on Saturday, but having put the ball in the back of the net twice, he was certainly the biggest one.

It was a huge day for Darwin, as his first Premier League goals since the beginning of November earned the Reds an enormous three points.

There have been claims that Nunez is likely to be sold this summer after what has been a disappointing campaign. But after his heroics at the weekend, Jamie Carragher has pinpointed exactly what role the 25-year-old should have for the rest of the campaign.

Jamie Carragher outlines new Darwin Nunez role

Saturday’s win has the potential to be a huge moment in this season’s Premier League title race.

Had Brentford held Liverpool to another draw, Arsenal would have gone into their own game against Aston Villa knowing that a win would move them to within two points of the Reds.

Instead, Nunez’s goals sucked the life out of the Emirates Stadium and the Gunners later blew a two-goal lead to draw with Villa.

Asked about whether he thinks the brace could save Nunez’s career at Anfield on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Carragher said that while he doesn’t think that will be the case, it did highlight to Arne Slot the part the Uruguayan can play moving forward.

“No. Not really, maybe right now. But I wouldn’t imagine he will be at the club next season,” said the former Liverpool centre-back. “I don’t know, I’m not privy to those conversations.”

“But he has got a brilliant record coming from the bench. I think since he joined the club, he has got more goals and assists than anyone in the Premier League from the bench, so maybe that is his role from now until the end of the season – which can help Liverpool get over the line.”

Will Nunez start for Liverpool against Lille?

While Carragher feels likely to be right about Nunez’s time at Liverpool soon coming to an end, that doesn’t mean he can’t go out with a bang.

And after his match-winning turn on Saturday – and also Luis Diaz’s failure to spark as a number nine – it seems probable that Nunez will get the chance to go again when Liverpool play Lille.

Diogo Jota is still injured, meaning that Slot will be picking from either Diaz or Nunez.

Give the Anfield crowd will be keen to show him some love after the weekend, you’d imagine it could be the perfect opportunity to help Darwin build on his new-found confidence.

He has not been the signing Liverpool fans had expected he could be, but Nunez still has the chance to be a decisive player in the Reds push for a 20th league title.
