Liverpool claimed one of their biggest wins of the Premier League season so far with a 2-0 result against Aston Villa.

Manchester City’s loss earlier in the day meant Liverpool went five points clear at the top of the table, the Reds in a good position to challenge for the title this season after such a strong start to the year under Arne Slot.

Although Liverpool lost Trent Alexander-Arnold due to injury, spirits are as high as they have ever been around Anfield heading into this month’s international break, with the Reds also top of the UEFA Champions League table.

Yet Alan Shearer has highlighted how one Liverpool player can improve after last night’s win.

Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez told to think less in front of goal

Speaking on Match of the Day, the pundit noted how Darwin Nunez seems to overthink his finishing whenever given an extra second to have a shot from a good opportunity, with the striker scoring Liverpool’s opener against Villa.

“Without doubt, his pace is a great strength and he is always going to cause defenders problems. This is a really clever finish, if only you could say that so many other times about him because he is very erratic in his finishing at times, and that is going to frustrate some.

“On the positive side, he never ever stops getting in there and you have to admire that. He links up really, really well with Mo Salah. He has got 22 in 73 in the Premier League for Liverpool, but it could and should be a whole lot more because he does miss big chances.

“I think he is better when he doesn’t have time to think about, when it happens naturally. When he has that three or four seconds to think about it, I think he becomes more erratic. I am not sure that’s going to get better. He will have times when you think: ‘Oh my goodness, that has improved massively when he is scoring goals for a month,’ very tricky.”

Nunez showed against Villa that he could be turning a corner

Although Liverpool fans were mixed on Nunez’s performance against Villa, the Uruguay international was more efficient than usual with the striker scoring a fantastic goal against Emi Martinez to set the Reds on their way.

And as per Nunez’s stats against Villa, the forward was a productive force in the attack for the Reds, with the former Benfica star unlucky to not add to his goal tally having had two great chances against Unai Emery’s side.

Indeed, Nunez has shown in recent weeks that he is becoming more sensible with his attacking choices, and there could be a hint of the striker turning a corner based on recent performances with Liverpool.
