Darren Bent shares who he thinks is better out of Liverpool’s Alisson and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez

As the clock ticks down on the summer transfer window, Liverpool continue to be happy with the squad they already have in place.

The Reds remain the only side in the Premier League not to do any incoming business this season.

While that is a huge frustration to supporters – and perhaps even some of the players given Virgil van Dijk’s comments on the transfer window – it won’t affect Liverpool’s thinking.

In some ways, you can understand it. The Liverpool squad is deep and packed with talent in every single position.

Ironically, the one area of the team it looks like the Reds are actively working on a signing in is perhaps the strongest on paper: goalkeeper. In Alisson Becker, they have one of the best goalies in the club’s history.

Emi Martinez or Alisson Becker?

Liverpool’s decision to try and sign Giorgi Mamardashvili has certainly raised some eyebrows this summer.

The Georgian is a top-class ‘keeper in the making and there have been reports that Liverpool think Mamardashvili could be their goalie for ten years.

Before he joins, though – if the deal is done, that is – the 23-year-old will be sent out on-loan. Alisson will remain in the interim.

While that is all good news, it does raise the real possibility that Alisson’s days at Liverpool will come to an end soon.

With that in mind, it’s worth looking at the legacy that the Brazilian leaves. According to TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent, it is one as the best current ‘keeper in England.

Asked first and foremost where Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez ranks in terms of Premier League goalkeepers, the former Villa striker said the Argentine does not top Alisson.

“Top five in the Premier League for me would be Alisson, Ederson, Martinez is in there, maybe two or three,” he said. “I think Alisson’s still the best. The other two are hard. But those are the three.

“If you put him [Martinez] at the top of those three I’m not going to be angry with you because he’s won the World Cup. He’s not a bit part player for Argentina, he is the guy for them.”

Liverpool should enjoy Alisson swansong

Given the Mamardashvili situation and the strong links Alisson had with Saudi Arabia over the summer, it seems likely that Liverpool’s No.1 will soon leave.

During his time at the club, Alisson has undoubtedly become one of the best ‘keepers in world football.

Many would subscribe to Bent’s view that the Brazil international is the top man in the Premier League and he’s going to leave one heck of a hole to fill.

As a result, Liverpool fans should really enjoy Alisson while they can. While Mamardashvili looks like an excellent ‘keeper, Ali is a different breed altogether.

With the 31-year-old between the sticks the Reds’ defence has never felt safer. He’s better than Martinez, no question about that. In fact, he might just be the best there ever was.
