Liverpool are continuing to push for their first signing of the summer transfer market.
With just 16 days left of the window, the Reds are the only team from Europe’s top five leagues yet to add to their squad since the end of last season.
That had looked likely to change as Liverpool tried to sign Martin Zubimendi. However, while Liverpool insist that Zubimendi initially gave them a yes, the Spaniard ultimately turned them down.
From there, it looks like the Reds are continuing to shop in La Liga. Liverpool are in talks to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.
Outside looking in, it feels like a bit of an unnecessary signing for Arne Slot. But staff at Liverpool reportedly have big plans for Mamardashvili.

Liverpool have decade-long plan for Giorgi Mamardashvili
Liverpool’s interest in Mamardashvili does raise questions over the future of current number one Alisson Becker.
Alisson is one of the most popular members of the Liverpool squad and is quite possibly the best goalkeeper in the world.
A move to bring Mamardashvili in will perhaps worry fans who may start to fear an exit for the Brazilian.
However, journalist David Lynch has confirmed that Alisson is going nowhere this summer, with Mamardashvili very much seen as one for the future.

And according to Valencia based outlet Levante EMV, the Reds see that future as being very much long-term for the Georgian.
They claim that Liverpool have presented Mamardashvili with a ‘plan’ that would see him become their ‘go-to’ goalkeeper for the next 10 years.
This plan would reportedly include a loan to another Premier League club for the first year, with it claimed that a temporary stay at Valencia would also be a possibility.
Mamardashvili is said to be ‘seduced’ by the idea as well as the proposal of what is claimed to be a ‘long-term’ contract from Liverpool. Talks are reportedly ongoing for the two clubs to agree a transfer fee.
Smart planning, or unecessary expense?
When Richard Hughes spoke alongside Slot in a press conference in June, the new sporting director claimed that Liverpool may look for ‘opportunism’ in the transfer market.
The potential deal for Zubimendi would fall into this bracket, with the player seemingly available having previously ruled out a move.
While that proved to be a fallacy in the end, you can also understand how Mamardashvili’s move could be seen as taking advantage of a situation.
Valencia clearly need to sell this summer and having failed to make up the money with the rest of the squad, the goalkeeper is now on the market.
With Alisson’s long-term future perhaps sadly lying away from Liverpool, it could be seen as smart planning from the Reds. On the flip-side, it does feel odd to be spending on a player that does not immediately improve the squad when there are glaring holes elsewhere.
