Arne Slot still hasn’t decided whether he wants to keep or sell £17m Liverpool player this summer

Liverpool are entering into a decisive two weeks as they aim to complete their squad for the new season.

The Reds have so far been frustrated in their attempts to bolster the team, with a failed move for Martin Zubimendi as good as things have got.

Things look set to ramp up towards the end of August, though. Liverpool are in talks to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili and despite there being no pressing need for a new goalkeeper, that would be a good signing.

Beyond Mamardashvili, it remains to be seen whether Arne Slot chooses to add to his first-team squad.

Perhaps more likely is that the new head coach gets rid of a few and boosts the transfer kitty that way. Slot now has some decisions to make on which Liverpool players are expendable.

Liverpool yet to decide on Sepp van den Berg

Liverpool made a big sale earlier this week when Fabio Carvalho joined Brentford for almost £30m.

That move happened very quickly indeed, with barely a day between the news breaking and Carvalho being unveiled by his new club.

By contrast, the saga involving centre-back Sepp van den Berg has rumbled on all summer long.

Van den Berg wants to leave Liverpool after getting a taste of first-team action while away at Mainz last season. But with time running out, the 22-year-old remains at Anfield.

There have been claims that Liverpool have turned down numerous bids for Van den Berg including a slightly derisory offer from PSV Eindhoven.

And according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, the Eredivisie side have now walked away from any deal.

With Liverpool reportedly holding out for at least £17m to sell Van den Berg, PSV are said to have ‘shifted interest’ to other targets.

As well as the price-tag, PSV have supposedly ended their interest in Van den Berg because Liverpool are yet to decide on exactly what to do with the centre-back.

The Reds’ hesitance is claimed to be based on it currently being ‘unclear’ what will happen with other players in Slot’s defence. While that remains murky, Van den Berg’s future is seemingly being left open.

Liverpool should keep Van den Berg

It’s obvious that Van den Berg feels he is ready to make the next step in his career and play regular first-team football somewhere.

However, based on his showings in pre-season, the Netherlands U21 international also has a chance of making that happen at Liverpool one day.

Granted, Van den Berg should not be anything like first choice for the Reds right now, but if he sticks around for next season he’ll likely get 15-20 games.

Do well, and he has a chance to become a starter for Liverpool in the years immediately to come.

We understand the impatience from Sepp and teams like PSV. But Liverpool are under no obligation to sell for under market value and should keep Van den Berg around if their fee is not met.
