There’s a real anticipation that Liverpool are only just beginning their transfer activity.

The Reds have so far kept out of the market as they look for some continuity from Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club.

With Arne Slot brand new through the door and a new coaching team also in place, Liverpool have allowed for a grace period since the end of the season.

Slot has been able to take a look at all of the available members of the Liverpool squad without having to worry about anybody being sold off before he’s had time to properly assess them.

But with the season now only three weeks away, it’s time to start getting serious. It’s expected that Liverpool will make some signings, but it also looks like the exit door could get some use, too.

Sepp van den Berg in talks over transfer

Whether or not Liverpool do any business over the remaining month of the window is likely to depend on where Slot sees the level of some players as being at.

There are one or two clear weak points within the squad at Anfield but there are also some interesting young players coming through from the academy.

If Liverpool decide not to strengthen, it’s a sign that some of these youngsters will be used. If they do, then it’s probably been decreed that they are not quite ready yet.

One player who this pertains to perhaps more than any other is centre-back Sepp van den Berg.

Liverpool are looking for a new centre-back this summer, but if Van den Berg can step up after a top season on-loan with Mainz, then there arguably is no need to make a signing.

Unfortunately, though, Van den Berg wants to leave Liverpool. And according to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, the 22-year-old is in talks with Hoffenheim about a permanent move back to the Bundesliga.

“SG Hoffenheim have entered the race for Sepp van den Berg!” Plettenberg reports on X. “22 y/o central defender wants to leave Liverpool this transfer window as reported.

“Talks between Hoffenheim and the player’s side have taken place. No talks with LFC yet. Mainz 05, still there but Liverpool demand €20m [£17m] now,” he adds.

“He‘s also on the list of VfB [Stuttgart] but it’s not concrete between Stuttgart and the player/Liverpool at this stage!”

PSV Eindhoven still pushing for Sepp van den Berg

Van den Berg is one of Liverpool’s biggest assets during this summer’s market.

Despite Plettenberg’s claims that the Reds want around £17m to sell the Dutchman, it has previously been reported that Liverpool want closer to £20m for Van den Berg.

With so much interest in the centre-back, there’s really no need for the Reds to accept less than they think they should.

It was claimed on Wednesday that PSV Eindhoven will continue to push for Van den Berg until late in August. A bidding war could commence.

Despite the interest in him, though, we still don’t think it’s a given that Liverpool will sell the Netherlands U21 star. Slot has been impressed by Van den Berg and perhaps would prefer to keep him around. Let’s see if anything concrete moves forward.
