For Liverpool, as the transfer window grinds to a halt it’s fair to say January has been pretty uneventful. On the transfer front, the club has conducted all their business in the loan market. Several players were recalled from unsuccessful loans, and several others were sent out on loans as well.

But when it comes to new arrivals, Liverpool have kept their cards closed to their chest. Much of that will be due to the uncertainty around Jurgen Klopp’s imminent departure.

Although, there was one exciting winger the club did actively pursue and was interested in. RTK exclusively revealed less than two weeks ago that Liverpool had a concrete interest in Momodou Lamin Sonko.

The talented 18-year-old was being eyed by the likes of The City Group, Bologna and the Red Bull group as well. Having hit 22 goal contributions in 44 games for his club side, Hacken – Sonko is one of the brightest young talents of his generation in Europe.

Momodou Sonko latest

Now RTK understands that Sonko will not be moving to any of the aforementioned clubs. Instead, it is Belgium where he will be heading. KAA Gent, have agreed a deal with Hacken worth around £7m, which will see Sonko sign a contract until 2028 with the club.

RTK can exclusively reveal that this does not rule out a future move to Anfield for the youngster. Liverpool’s interest will remain in Sonko. The club will continue to monitor his progress in Belgium, and a move in the future is still on the cards.

The Belgian Pro League is a competition that Liverpool have extensively scouted. The Reds first monitored Victor Osimhen when he was playing in Belgium. Jonathan David, who played for Gent, was also spotted playing in the division.

Meanwhile, Antonio Nusa, at Club Brugge, is another name Liverpool have followed extensively since he has started to make his mark in Belgium. Although he now seems to be heading to a different Premier League club.

There are high hopes Sonko will be able to follow in the footsteps of the players mentioned above. He really caught the eye in the Europa League. And will now look to fill the void left behind by attacking sensation Gift Orban, who joined Lyon this month.
