Gary Lineker shares what he really used to think about Joe Gomez at Liverpool

As Liverpool’s season goes from strength to strength, certain players are really starting to shine.

Of course, the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been brilliant – they nearly always are. But beyond Jurgen Klopp’s ‘untouchable’ quartet, there’s another unlikely hero who’s really stood out of late.

That man is Joe Gomez. Having been filling in at left-back recently, Gomez’s dependable performances have been coming under the spotlight of late. Klopp went out of his way to praise the 26-year-old after Wednesday’s game at Fulham, for example.

And now, applause has come for Gomez by way of Micah Richards and Gary Lineker. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the two pundits made sure to mention the return to form of Liverpool’s No.2.

“Joe Gomez looks steady, doesn’t he?” says Richards. “He has had that big injury then he was linked away, and then he is a centre-half playing left-back because Robertson has been out and so has Tsimikas, and it looks like he is gradually getting back to the Gomez we know.”

“It’s great to see that actually,” Lineker agrees. “Because he burst on to the scene and we all thought wow what a player and early days he was brilliant. Big injuries can really affect you and he has certainly had some.”

Gomez getting back to his best

If you ask Gomez, he’d probably tell you that he’d prefer all this praise to be coming his way for his performances at centre-back.

But given the way the last few years have gone for the former Charlton youngster, beggars can’t be choosers.

Back when Robertson and then Tsimikas got injured, it had looked like Liverpool were really in trouble.

Still haunted by some of his dodgy displays last season in particular, fans perhaps didn’t feel as though they could rely on Gomez to fill in.

Game by game though, the England international has proven just about everybody wrong. Now, Gomez looks like a real asset to Liverpool once again.

With Robertson now back and Tsimikas closing in on a return, it remains to be seen just how much game time Joe gets moving forward. But whatever happens for the rest of this season, he’s more than played his part.

Interest was supposedly coming in Gomez from Tottenham Hotspur in the early part of this month. After his performances in recent times, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see another team try their hand in the summer, too.

But having underlined just what he can give to Liverpool, they’d be mad to sell Gomez. We all thought the same as Lineker when we saw Joe coming through as a youngster. It’s taken him a little while to get there, but he’s now truly fulfilling his potential.
