Tottenham Hotspur interested in signing 26-year-old Liverpool ‘superstar’

Liverpool may have to prepare for an assault from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

The Reds aren’t used to doing to much business with their Premier League rivals. In fact, you have to go back all the way to 2008 for the last time Liverpool and Spurs were involved in a deal.

However, according to The Daily Mail, that may now be about to change.

They claim that with Tottenham ‘prioritising’ defensive reinforcements in January, Ange Postecoglou has his eye on Reds’ defender Joe Gomez.

Gomez reportedly isn’t the only one on the shortlist. Lloyd Kelly – who has also been linked with Liverpool – is said to be another one Spurs are looking at, as well as Jean-Clair Todibo and Radu Dragusin.

With Cristian Romero claimed to be out for the next five weeks or so, Tottenham are looking a little desperate.

Spurs looking at Gomez

Had this interest from Tottenham come during the summer, then there’s a possibility that Liverpool may have entertained it.

Gomez was poor last season. If Spurs – or anyone – had come in with a decent offer, Jurgen Klopp may well have sold him.

Fast-forward just a few months though, and the chances of the 26-year-old leaving Liverpool this winter are close to zero.

There’s a reason Gomez has recently been hailed as a ‘superstar’ by Steve McManaman. The defender has been virtually impeccable for the Reds so far this season.

Having filled in well at right-back and centre-back, the former Charlton Athletic man is now Liverpool’s first-choice left-back. It’s obviously not Joe’s favoured position, but so far he’s looked good there.

As well as doing his best Andy Robertson impression, Gomez is currently Liverpool’s back-up to Trent Alexander-Arnold. As the third choice in the middle too, the England international is an absolute key player right now.

Consequently, there’s simply no way at all that Klopp would think about selling Gomez in January.

There are some other, quality options on Tottenham’s shortlist here. They’re going to have use them instead. Not. For. Sale.
