Jamie Carragher says Jurgen Klopp now has four ‘untouchable’ players at Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has named four Liverpool players as being ‘untouchable’ at the club right now.

After a dismal year last year, the Reds have bounced back in 2023/24. The upturn in collective performance has unsurprisingly coincided with the return to form from some of Liverpool’s biggest names.

And writing in The Telegraph today, Carragher has claimed that four players in particular are now above reproach at Anfield.

The piece in general looks at the performance of vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold. And Carra names the right-back as one of these so-called ‘untouchables’ alongside Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and captain Virgil van Dijk.

The pundit cites the displays of these four as a major reason behind why Liverpool have been able to revive themselves so quickly from last season.

Liverpool’s untouchable quartet

If you’re talking about certainties in the Liverpool starting XI right now, then perhaps these four – along with Andy Robertson when fit – are the only absolute certainties.

Some would argue that both Alexis Mac Allister and especially Dominik Szoboszlai also now fit into this category. But it’s fair to say that the four – plus Robertson – have eared the right for a guaranteed starting spot.

They are the five now left over from Liverpool’s all conquering side of 2018-2022. If you go through the team that won it all, the rest have now departed.

As a result, all of Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Alisson, Van Dijk and Robertson unarguably enjoy a certain status at Liverpool now.

Almost senior statesmanlike in their position, they now command a much younger group, with the likes of Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez and Ibrahima Konate set to take the reigns in the future.

Before they do though, this famous four or five have plenty of mileage still in their tanks.

Alisson, Van Dijk and Salah have probably been Liverpool’s best three players this season, once again underlining their absolute importance.

Alexander-Arnold and Robertson haven’t been quite as effective. But Trent is still central to everything the Reds do, while Robbo’s stock has surely only gone up during his injury absence.

Over time this will shift, with new leaders and new key men coming to the fore. But just as they have done for so much of the past six years, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp will continue to rely on the brilliance of these pillars of their success.
