Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has been an instant hit at Anfield this season.
Having only arrived over the summer, plenty will have expected Szoboszlai to have needed an adaptation period at Anfield. Instead, the Hungarian hit the ground running.
Since then, there has been a little wobble it must be said. After being likened to Reds icon Steven Gerrard in his early months at the club, Szoboszlai’s form has dipped off a little over the winter period.
It has perhaps been during that time that the 23-year-old has witnessed the love from supporters more than ever. And speaking to liverpoolfc.com about the fans this week, Szoboszlai says that their backing of the team in tough moments is what has really stood out to him.
“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world,” raves the former RB Leipzig man. “The people, how they love the club is amazing, they always show us support.
“Of course, sometimes it doesn’t work that well [on the pitch] but we are always working on it. We don’t do it bad because we want to, it’s just this day. We have also a couple of days where we cannot do our 100 per cent and even if you do 100 per cent it will maybe not be enough. But this is the thing: [they are] still there, enjoying, and [I’m] happy to have fans like that.”
Szoboszlai praises Liverpool fans
It’s safe to say that the love between Szoboszlai and Liverpool fans is very much mutual. He’s been taken to almost immediately by Reds.
Of course, his incredible early performances had a great deal to do with that, but it isn’t the only thing that has endeared people to Dom.
He also seems like a humble and appreciative young man. As a superstar back in Hungary, it would be easy for Szoboszlai to adopt a ‘big time Charlie’ type attitude. But that isn’t him at all.
Liverpool’s No.8 has come in and worked his socks off each and every game. He doesn’t stop running from the first minute to the last. The Anfield crowd recognises that kind of thing. And appreciates it.
Over recent weeks, it has been noticeable that Szoboszlai has been tiring just a little.
After limping out of the win over Newcastle United at the start of January, Liverpool have been missing their midfield general for three weeks now. It looks like Szoboszlai is in with a shout of a return over the next week or so, though.
Having been an ever-present for much of the season so far, the Hungary captain will surely be itching to get out in-front of his new, adoring public.
It may only be the start of the relationship between Liverpool fans and Szoboszlai, but you get the impression this will be a happy, long and productive marriage.
