Jamie Carragher invoked memories of Steven Gerrard after Dominik Szoboszlai’s rocket for Liverpool this evening.
Szoboszlai has been the toast of Anfield since arriving from RB Leipzig this summer. And the hype train won’t be stopping any time soon after the 22-year-old smashed in the go-ahead goal at the Kop end against Leicester City tonight.
It was a beautiful strike that was reminiscent of Gerrard in his prime. And taking to Twitter after the ball hit the net, Carragher relayed the commentary from one of Stevie’s most famous strikes.

“What a hit son!” wrote the pundit.
We’re not getting carried away, but what a player this boy is. Some hit that.
Szoboszlai finds his inner Gerrard
Carragher should know all about the goal he’s referencing here, seeing as he’s the one who set it up.
Gerrard scored some wonderful goals throughout his time at Liverpool, but few are more celebrated than his last-gasp goal against Olympiacos back in 2004.
Latching onto Carragher’s knock down, captain fantastic arrowed the ball into the far corner to send Liverpool into the knockout stages of a Champions League they’d go on to win.

He may not hold a high place in most Reds fans hearts, but Andy Gray’s commentary for Sky Sports that evening has passed into legend.
So, although to the uninitiated Carragher’s tweet here may seem innocuous, it’s really anything but. The inference is clear; this was a Steven Gerrard-esque goal from a Steven Gerrard-esque player.
Liverpool fans have been waiting a long time for a player who could remotely fill the boots of perhaps their greatest ever player.
But in Szoboszlai, they may well finally have a man who fits the bill. His strike tonight was absolutely ludicrous. All power, crashed in off the bar, in-front of the Kop when his team needed him most. Haven’t we been here before? What a hit indeed.
