Journalist shares what he’s been told Schmadtke is doing in the transfer market for Liverpool now

Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke is keeping tabs on plenty of players ahead of the January transfer market.

Schmadtke had a busy summer after his surprise appointment earlier this year, and will be crucial to any moves the Reds are planning in the winter.

With that in mind, German journalist Christian Falk has told Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing that the 59-year-old is continuing to heavily scout the Bundesliga for suitable players.

“I’m not surprised Donyell Malen is on Liverpool’s list, he’s doing very well at the moment in Dortmund,” Falk began, adressing rumours the Reds want the Dutchman. “If somebody’s scoring, it’s usually him; he’s having his best season for Dortmund at the moment.

“I heard Liverpool are intensively scouting in the Bundesliga because of their sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, of course!”

Schmadtke still scouting around

Although there were claims that Liverpool may assess Schmadtke’s role once the summer was over, it appears that he’s still in place at Anfield.

As a result, it would be a shock if there were anyone else brought in to handle the January window.

Regardless, the mid-season market is usually a relatively quiet time for Liverpool. There is always a chance that they’ll make a move if they right opportunity becomes available, but it’ll be nothing like the summer.

Nevertheless, it sounds like Schmadtke is looking around to see if there are any such opportunities for the Reds.

Malen is indeed having a good campaign, but there are other German based players that Liverpool have reportedly had their eye on, too.

Perhaps the most likely is a player like Piero Hincapie. The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back was heavily linked in the last days of the summer, and despite the emergence of Jarell Quansah, Liverpool are probably still looking for a defender.

Others such as Manu Kone have regularly been claimed to be on the Reds list as well. But with a move expected to be pushed ahead for Andre Trindade, we’re not sure on that one. Let’s wait and see what Jorg’s got up his sleeve.
