Liverpool bringing in staff member just for three months to help Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool are set to appoint sporting director Jorg Schmadtke on a short-term contract.

Schmadtke emerged as a surprise front-runner for the vacant position over the weekend. Now, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, an agreement between the German and Liverpool is ‘imminent.’

Expanding on that news, fellow journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft has reported that Schmadtke’s deal will be on a three-month basis, purely to give Jurgen Klopp a hand in the upcoming transfer market.

“I understand it’s 3 months deal. Just helping Liverpool out in the coming transfer window!” Fjortoft wrote on Twitter.

An interesting move from the Reds. Should Fjortoft’s information turn out to be correct, it would suggest that they still haven’t made progress on a long-term candidate.

Schmadtke set for short-term Anfield stay

There was surprise amongst the Liverpool fanbase on Tuesday night. The Daily Mail reporting that Schmadtke was set to sign a three-year deal at Anfield. Clearly, Fjortoft’s information flies in the face of that claim.

Only one can be correct, though. On the face of it, it would make much more sense to bring in the 59-year-old on a temporary basis.

Clearly, Liverpool haven’t nailed down their ideal candidate just yet. But with Julian Ward set to depart in the next few weeks and with so much work to do in the market, they need someone in place.

Given Klopp’s previously stated desire to work with Schmadtke – and his availability and experience- it’s a move that could end up being very shrewd.

If the sporting director does well, maybe he’ll earn himself a longer stay. As far as transfer windows go, summer 2023 looks like being a heck of an audition.

Otherwise, it’s perhaps most likely that Schmadtke does his job and moves along. That will hopefully leave Liverpool having signed the players they wanted and with good time to find Ward’s permanent replacement. Interesting times ahead, let’s wait for an official announcement.
