Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke has admitted that he’s still unsure on his future at Anfield.
Schmadtke took over from Julian Ward on a temporary basis at the start of July. Since then, the 59-year-old has had a busy time of it, and looks set to get even busier over the coming weeks.
Beyond that, it’s still unclear whether Schmadtke will continue at Liverpool into next season. Speaking to Sky Germany today, the sporting director admitted that nothing had yet been decided.
“We are waiting until the end of August,” he says. “We have a one-year contract, but we have the opportunity to ask each other in August, are we both still sure or not.
“If someone isn’t sure, we’ll shake hands and maybe I’ll get a ticket if I want to stop by.”
Schmadtke out to prove his worth
For the time being, Schmadtke appears to be doing a relatively good job at Liverpool. But it’s still a little tricky to fully judge.
The deal to sign Alexis Mac Allister was a brilliant one, but it was seemingly more or less sealed by Schmadtke’s predecessor, Julian Ward.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s arrival was all the former Wolfsburg boss’ doing, but having failed to negotiate a lower fee, Liverpool simply ended up paying the Hungarian’s release clause.

So, two very good additions for the Reds, but neither a real demonstration of Schmadtke’s ability as a negotiator.
Now though, he’s really going to have to earn his corn. Liverpool look set to bring in around £52m for the sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. He’s done well to manage that.
Once that money hits the bank though, Schmadtke needs to go on the offensive. There are a number of targets seemingly being monitored. With Liverpool now needing to do even more business than they initially thought Jorg is going to have to draw on all of his experience.
If he can see Liverpool through with a couple of good signings, there’s no reason he shouldn’t continue into the future. It all rests on these next six weeks or so.
