England lost their first game of their European Championship qualifying on Friday. The 3 Lions succumbed to a 2-1 defeat away to the Czech Republic. The England lineup only featured 1 Liverpool player, Jordan Henderson. Gareth Southgate’s poor decisions could prove crucial to the Reds title charge.

Currently Liverpool sit 8 points clear at the top of the Premier League after 8 games. The Reds have a settled group of starters with only the midfield 3 rotating. The current England squad features just 3 Liverpool players despite the Reds unstoppable form. The internationals in question are Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez.

The England back 4 is a disaster at the moment. Harry Maguire has looked shaky at best and Michael Keane has been woeful for club and country this season. John Stones is out injured. The only viable reason for Joe Gomez’ absence from the England XI is his lack of gametime for his club. The centre back was a regular fixture in the side until a leg break against Burnley last December. Joel Matip has cemented his place in Jürgen Klopp’s defence since. Despite his lack of playing time, Gomez is the best centre back that Southgate has available.

Alexander-Arnold’s exclusion from the starting lineup just beggars belief. He is the best right back in the world at the minute, why Southgate won’t start him makes no sense. However, this is a blessing for Liverpool.

As long as Gareth Southgate continues to not pick Liverpool players, we have a better chance of winning the league. More games means for our key players gives them more chance to pick up an injury. The last thing Liverpool need is a spell without Alexander-Arnold. Cheers, Southgate, you keep up the bizarre team selections and we’ll keep up the title charge.
