Joe Gomez should keep his place in the Liverpool side this Saturday. This weekend’s fixture sees the Anfield return of Brendan Rodgers as he brings a fearless Leicester City side to Merseyside. The Foxes are currently sitting in 3rd place in the Premier League and look like they have a strong claim to stay in the top 4 for the remainder of the season. Wednesday night saw Liverpool welcome Red Bull Salzburg to Anfield for a chaotic game that saw 7 goals and the return of Joe Gomez to the Liverpool lineup. The England international should keep his place in the Reds side this weekend.
Gomez started Wednesday’s game due to an injury to Joel Matip. The Cameroonian defender has made himself undroppable in the last 9 months, he stepped into the side following a leg break for Joe Gomez at Burnley. Jürgen Klopp claimed that the injury sustained by Matip was not serious but refused to confirm whether he would definitely be ok for the Leicester game. If Joel is not 100% fit then we should not risk him on Saturday. Matip has formed an impassable partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk and a long term injury to the 28 year old could be devastating for Liverpool’s ambitions this year, given that Gomez himself is no stranger to the physio.
Allowing the England international to keep his place in the side would also help him regain some sharpness, over the course of a season when Liverpool are competing on all fronts, Gomez will inevitably be asked to step into the lineup from time to time and he definitely looked rusty against Red Bull Salzburg. It is vital that we don’t allow JoGo to fall into disrepair, he needs to be getting gametime when it is available, let’s not forget that when Gomez was a regular in the Liverpool lineup, him and Van Dijk were a formidable partnership.
