Liverpool will reportedly target the signing of a new right-back after acquiring two top wingers this summer.

The Reds are already moving to try and bolster their front line ahead of next season, and on Thursday Liverpool made contact over the addition of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.

While it remains to be seen whether Diomande eventually joins, The Guardian have claimed that Liverpool are attempting to sign two wingers regardless, before moving on to their second priority of the summer: right full-back.

Liverpool want a right-back as a priority

It was clear throughout last season that Liverpool finally needed a revamp of their options on the wing.

The Guardian claim that Arne Slot knew this as well as anybody, and had been preparing to add two wide forwards to his Liverpool squad this summer.

Clearly, the Dutchman will now not oversee this transition, but it is claimed that the Reds as a club agree with their former head coach and are making the signing of two new wingers – one to replace Luis Diaz 12 months on, and the other to succeed Mohamed Salah – as their main task of the window.

Beyond that, Liverpool will aim to bring in another right-back as a ‘pressing requirement.’

The Reds are also said to be keen on signing an ‘experienced central defender’ as well as a central midfield player, but will prioritise the wing and right full-back positions first.

As ever, Liverpool will reportedly react to player sales and ‘market opportunities,’ with centre-back and central midfield the key areas to be aware of, with these two positions said to be more of interest later in the summer.

Who could Liverpool’s new right-back be?

With nobody quite sure if Conor Bradley will be fit for pre-season, and Jeremie Frimpong plainly not the answer, it is easy to see how Liverpool have come to this conclusion over their right-back choices.

What is less obvious, is where they go from here. Denzel Dumfries had looked like a good option, but the Dutchman is joining Real Madrid, while Atalanta’s Marco Palestra, who had also been linked, seems likely to replace him at Inter.

There are Premier League options such as Brentford’s Michael Kayode, but there would be question marks over whether he is better than what Liverpool have.

Givairo Read looks set to leave Feyenoord, and the Dutchman is definitely one to watch, but as of now, links have been stronger for Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

All of this points to the possibility that Liverpool could have a surprise target brewing.

The wingers are obviously the big-ticket items for Reds fans this summer and hopefully they will add plenty of excitement to what has quickly become a drab team.

But if Liverpool are to get back to their best under Iraola, then signing a new right-back who can consistently stay fit will be just as important.
