Reported Liverpool transfer target Givairo Read has confirmed that he is likely to leave Feyenoord this summer.
The 19-year-old has quickly become one of the most highly sought after young defenders in Europe after breaking through under Arne Slot in 2023/24.
Liverpool were strongly linked with Read during last summer’s window as they searched for a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but ultimately chose not to make a move.
Who should advance into the semi-final as Liverpool’s Player of the Year?
Ryan Gravenberch or Mohamed Salah? 🤔
12 months on, and with Liverpool still having failed to effectively find a solution at right-back, a reunion between Slot and Read could still materialise. Speaking after Feyenoord’s season ended on Sunday, the young Dutchman confirmed that a transfer is now likely.
Read says he’s likely played his last game for Feyenoord
There is no question that Liverpool have to be active at right-back this summer. Slot has suggested that Conor Bradley may not be fit for pre-season, while Jeremie Frimpong does not look like being the answer either.
Read looks like the kind of profile who could be more of a success, and though there will be wariness of a season half-ruined by injury, he will certainly be an option this summer.
Helpfully, Read seems to be available. Having been asked by ESPN NL if Sunday’s draw with AZ Alkmaar could be his last game for Feyenoord, the teenager was candid with his answer.

“I certainly realised that [it might be his last game for Feyenoord],” he said.
“It is no longer a secret that clubs are watching me and that a move might be coming up in the summer. I don’t want to keep that a secret either.
“But I haven’t made a choice yet, so I’m still under contract with Feyenoord. It could very well have been my last home match, but I don’t want to say that too soon.”
Man City and Bayern could come in for Read
While Liverpool fans would deduce that a move for Read would make a great deal of sense – and former boss Slot could be the trump card – they will face competition for him.
Manchester City have been named as an interested party, while there have even been suggestions that Bayern have a pre-agreement to sign Read this summer.
You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?
Who should Richard Hughes be targeting above all…
Nevertheless, their need for a right-back should also put Liverpool firmly in the picture.
Read is clearly ready to move on from Feyenoord, and though he is extremely highly-rated, he should not cost the earth either.
Liverpool simply cannot go into next season without addressing a position which has arguably cost them more than any other this term.
Read is available, ready to move, knows Slot well and looks to have the quality to be a potential starter in the coming years. It just makes sense.
