Liverpool’s search for a new midfielder has reportedly brought them back to a familiar face in Assan Ouedraogo.
The RB Leipzig teenager was on Liverpool’s radar during Jurgen Klopp’s time at Anfield, with reports in 2023 claiming the Reds had spoken to his representatives while he was still at Schalke. Ouedraogo has since moved to Leipzig and developed into one of the most exciting young midfielders in Germany.
He has previously been compared to Xabi Alonso, although he is a very different physical profile. At 6ft 4in, Ouedraogo is powerful, press-resistant and comfortable carrying the ball through midfield. It’s no surprise Liverpool are interested.

Liverpool prepared to move for RB Leipzig’s Assan Ouedraogo
A new report from Fussballdaten claims Ouedraogo is attracting serious interest ahead of the summer window.
Leipzig are said to want to keep the 19-year-old for at least one more season, but there is an acceptance that a major offer could change that stance. The German side reportedly value him in the region of £40 million.
FSG have already looked at him before. Back in 2023, Ouedraogo’s management were in talks with Liverpool while Klopp was still manager.
That link is even more interesting now, given Klopp has since become Red Bull’s head of global soccer. Similarly to the situation with Yan Diomande, that could work in Liverpool’s favour.

Ouedraogo would be a strong fit for Liverpool
The German international has the size and athleticism Liverpool have lacked at times in midfield, but he is not just a destroyer. His dribbling, intelligence in tight spaces and playmaking qualities all stand out.
Three goals and three assists in 17 games is an impressive tally and shows he has that attacking edge to his game.
Ouedraogo is more of an eight than a six, like Ryan Gravenberch, but he’s more physical and young enough to be moulded into a deeper role. He would help address the issues of the current midfield unit while also giving Slot a player with room to develop.
For around £40m, this is exactly the type of deal we should be watching closely. Liverpool have known about him for years, and this summer may be the right time to finally make their move.
