Liverpool fans have put Arne Slot under a lot of pressure during the 2025/26 season.

During a run of nine defeats from 12 in all competitions earlier this term, there was talk about Slot being replaced.

Meanwhile, the idea of an interim manager replacing the Dutchman in the dugout was floated at the start of 2026.

However, the 47-year-old has remained in his post and the results, it’s fair to say, have been mixed.

Liverpool did beat Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup last weekend, but they struggled to replicate that performance against Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool fans want Xabi Alonso to be manager

On Sunday, fans questioned why Curtis Jones started as the number 10 when Dominik Szoboszlai was playing at right-back.

And after an overall poor display, many supporters are calling for Xabi Alonso to be the next Liverpool manager. One fan stated: “Get Slot and Gakpo out and bring in Xabi Alonso.”

“Could imagine Alonso demanding more from us in a game like this and making tweaks and changes even if he doesn’t get a reaction a bit like Pep Guardiola. With Slot, I feel he’s just content with this,” wrote a second.

Another added: “Someone tell John Henry, we ain’t getting top 4 this season if he leaves Slot in charge…#Alonso.”

A fourth commented: “We simply cannot lose out on Xabi Alonso over Arne Slot come on now seriously.”

“Thank you FSG, Hughes, Edwards and Slot. You’ve officially made me disconnect with this football club. Wake me up when Alonso walks through the doors,” added a fifth.

Another suggested: “If this is Slot’s last game in charge I wouldn’t be surprised, Alonso won’t wait forever.”

A seventh added: “Yeah, Slot out Alonso in,” with an eighth echoing: “Abysmal from us. Slot out! Alonso in!”

Will Xabi Alonso be Liverpool manager by the start of the 2026/27 season?

If no, where will he be instead?

Liverpool could miss out on Xabi Alonso to rival

Alonso rejected Marseille recently and has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid at the beginning of the year.

The links between Alonso and Liverpool have persisted since his exit, but it remains to be seen where the Spaniard will end up.

A move to Anfield would make sense, given the obvious connection to their former player.

However, Alonso moving to Manchester City has been mooted as a potential option, with Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium still not 100% clear.
