Arne Slot’s Liverpool have had a difficult 2025/26 campaign, and things still aren’t right despite an improvement in results.

Slot being replaced as manager was mooted heavily towards the back end of last year.

The Dutchman endured a run of nine defeats in 12 as manager, but FSG opted to stick with their man.

Liverpool have now gone on an 11-game unbeaten run, last tasting defeat in November. But fans still aren’t happy with Slot and the team’s performances.

Liverpool could replace Arne Slot with an interim manager

FSG are not known for making quick, rash decisions, as is evident by reports that Liverpool will be quiet in January despite several injury issues.

As a result, many likely expect the 47-year-old to remain in his post for the remainder of 2025/26, no matter how bad the performances get.

However, speaking to the Anfield Index, journalist David Lynch said that an interim manager being appointed can’t be ruled out, especially if Slot goes on another run of nine defeats from 12.

He said: “I think an interim is on the table if it gets really, really bad.

“They [FSG] clearly didn’t want to do it around the time it was nine defeats in 12. And they made the call that Slot would be better than any interim. But I wouldn’t rule that out at all.

“I think if it gets really, really bad again and they think we’ve just got to do something to stop it being as bad as it is.

“If he [Slot] suffers nine defeats in 12 over the next 12 games, they’ll go for an interim.”

Is winning the FA Cup enough to keep Arne Slot in a job beyond 2025/26? If not, why? 🤔

Who could be Liverpool’s next manager

In terms of potential options for the Merseyside outfit, Lynch mooted club icon Steven Gerrard.

He continued: “Who would be in the mix? Maybe it would be Stevie [Gerrard] just to see them through.

“Whoever else it would be, I’m not sure it would be particularly successful but you can’t lose that many games as Liverpool manager. You can’t just keep losing and losing. You can’t do that twice in a season, that’s for sure.”

Fans have already called for Gerrard to replace Arne Slot this year on the back of the 2-2 draw with Fulham.

Meanwhile, the former England international admitted last month that he would help Liverpool ‘with anything’ they needed.
