In an alternate timeline, Steven Gerrard is currently enjoying his second season as Liverpool manager after taking over from Jurgen Klopp.
The legendary former captain was supposed to be the heir apparent when Klopp called time on his Reds career.
However, by the time the German left in 2024, Gerrard was nowhere near the running.
Who is the biggest Liverpool legend of all-time?
Despite winning a Scottish League title with Rangers in 2021, the Scouser had ruined his reputation after overseeing a disappointing spell at Aston Villa. By 2024, he was managing Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.
Now looking for his next position, Gerrard had been tipped to replace Arne Slot back at Liverpool by former teammate John Arne Riise. And with Slot still under pressure to improve things at Anfield, Gerrard has spoken out on whether he would be willing to return.
Steven Gerrard would ‘help Liverpool with anything’
There is surely not a Liverpool fan on the planet who would not be excited to see Gerrard come back to his boyhood club.
Although from a managerial point of view he is unlikely to ever be the best candidate, the emotion of it alone would make it worthwhile.

And according to Gerrard himself, he would jump at the chance to come back to Liverpool – in any capacity. Speaking to TNT Sports via the Liverpool ECHO, the 45-year-old declared that he would help his former club with ‘anything.’
“I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I’d help them with anything,” Gerrard said, before clarifying that he does not want to see Slot lose his job.
“I don’t want Arne Slot to lose his job. I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league.”
What ONE word sums up Liverpool’s signing of Alexander Isak?
“I’m a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool. But if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I’ll be there for them.”
Gerrard underlines his status as the best ever
After Mohamed Salah’s recent public outburst, there has been a lot of talk about who is the greatest Liverpool legend of all-time.
While Salah certainly has a claim to take that title after all he has achieved on Merseyside, it is comments like these that simply set Gerrard apart.
Like Kenny Dalglish before him, the former No. 8 is Liverpool through and through. He embodies the football club.
Could you imagine Salah taking over as Liverpool manager in the future? It is certainly difficult to see.
So, while other supporters will have different views, many of which are valid, Gerrard’s love for Liverpool will always set him apart as the best to ever do it.
