Liverpool’s 5-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday was no coincidence.
Since Liverpool were beaten by Crystal Palace in the dying embers of their game back in September, it was clear that Arne Slot’s system wasn’t going to cut it this term.
Too many players from last year’s first-team squad have been chopped and changed, with his new arrivals having a different style of play compared to the ones he moved on.
This meant that a system change was more than due, and against Frankfurt, that’s exactly what happened with the Dutchman seemingly running a 4-4-2 against the Bundesliga outfit.

The 4-4-2 brought a lot more stability to the team, and it even allowed Florian Wirtz to have much more freedom, which resulted in him getting two assists.
Liverpool’s team as a whole felt much more structured against Frankfurt on Wednesday
Even though Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike only got to play 45 minutes alongside one another, it was clear that starting both number nines is going to be a possibility for Slot this season.
Both strikers may have similar play styles to one another, but it seemed to work against Frankfurt, with Ekitike even getting in on the action against his former club.
It also allowed Wirtz to fill in the gaps that the duo left behind, which made the formation much narrower and compact, resulting in the Reds having a stronger defensive line.
Indeed, they did concede the first goal of the game, but once they all got used to where one another was playing, it felt like a completely different side of Liverpool came out.
It also allowed the Anfield outfit’s central midfielders to get more involved in the game.
In fact, Curtis Jones even put in one of his best performances of the season despite not playing all that much football this term.
Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk were under much less pressure against Frankfurt
Since the 2025-26 season kicked off, questions have been asked about Liverpool’s defensive line.
Ibrahima Konate has been in some of his worst form ever, with others such as Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez failing to adapt to life as Liverpool players.
However, on Wednesday, things seemed much calmer, and to be honest, it felt like the old Liverpool were finally back.

Of course, their 5-1 win is only one game, but if Slot can build upon this system and allow his players to get used to it, they could be onto a winner.
This, after the last month or so of football that fans have had to endure, is exactly what Liverpool needed, especially if they want to try and retain their Premier League title and challenge for the Champions League.
