‘Huge story’ developing around Marc Guehi as Liverpool learn whether Crystal Palace will pull plug on deal

Liverpool have been messed around by Crystal Palace ever since their initial interest in Marc Guehi was reported.

The centre-back now has less than 12 months remaining on his deal at Selhurst Park, with his clear desire being to take the next step in his career with Liverpool.

Guehi was only interested in signing for the Anfield outfit this summer, with the Englishman even willing to stay at Palace and then join Arne Slot’s men for free at the end of the season.

In the end, however, Richard Hughes clearly realised that a deal worth £35million for the centre-back was too good to pass up on, even though they’ve already spent a lot of money this summer.

Liverpool still look likely to sign Marc Guehi this summer

Deadline day has been full of surprises for teams all across the Premier League.

However, it’s Liverpool who seem to have been the most active, with both Alexander Isak and Guehi set to join, while others, such as Harvey Elliott, are being sold on.

And now, despite Crystal Palace’s move for Igor Julio falling through at the last minute, it still seems like Liverpool are still going to get their man.

“Huge story and problems for Crystal Palace,” Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett reported via his personal X account.

“Deal with Brighton for CB [centre-back] Igor Julio collapses with West Ham hijacking the deal.

“Igor now heading from Palace TG [training ground] (where he had completed a medical) to West Ham TG [training ground].

“I’m told Palace will NOT pull Marc Guehi from going to Liverpool – now looking at other options.”

Liverpool are still on their way to ending the transfer window with their main targets this summer

Even without the signing of Guehi this summer, Liverpool would have been on course for one of the best transfer windows ever.

They’ve spent over £400million on improving their first-team squad, but with the amount of money that they’ve raised from sales, their net spend is far less than that.

Not only have Liverpool added top-quality players to their ranks, but they’ve also managed to massively improve their chances of retaining the Premier League title and winning the Champions League.

And, seeing as though Guehi’s transfer to Anfield still seems to be on, Slot may actually end the transfer window with each transfer target he wanted this summer, which in itself is a major achievement.

Of course, their team will need plenty of time to gel, but once they get into the swing of things, it’s hard to see how anybody will be able to stop them.
