Liverpool play host to Newcastle on Wednesday evening, two weeks prior to their Carabao Cup final meeting.

The Magpies are one of the few sides to take points from Liverpool this season, having held Arne Slot’s men to an entertaining 3-3 draw back in December.

Reds target Alexander Isak caused the Liverpool backline problems all afternoon, with Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez also struggling to deal with Anthony Gordon on the left flank.

Having seen his side fail to stifle the Newcastle attack at St James Park, Slot has pinpointed two Magpies players who will be a ‘threat’ at Anfield.

Arne Slot highlights Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon ‘threat’

With both Isak and Gordon seemingly on Liverpool’s transfer radar, Slot will no doubt be keeping one eye on their Anfield performance.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the game, the Liverpool manager highlighted the ‘threat’ of the Newcastle pair – praising the recent form of Isak.

“Understatement to say in fine form, he (Isak) is in excellent form. The team performance will help control him. The more ball possession we have the more we can control him although he is dangerous on counter-attacks. but we have two very good centre-backs, which is what you need when you face the quality of Isak.

“I like the style of play Eddie Howe has introduced, a team who has a very good game plan, very intense with or without the ball. Not the only offensive threat they have, Gordon is a big threat.”

Isak and Gordon’s big-six record may worry Liverpool

Liverpool were able to shut out Manchester City last weekend, but the Magpies will post a very different problem on Wednesday evening.

Quick, aggressive and clinical in the final third – Virgil van Dijk and co will have to be on their A-game to shut out the likes of Gordon and Isak, especially when you take a look at their record against the big six this season.

Daniel Sturridge recently labelled Isak as ‘special’, whether the Swede can prove that Anfield however, we will have to wait and see.
