Liverpool and Everton will contest the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

The fixture was scheduled to be played at the start of December, however, stormy conditions on Merseyside postponed the fixture to this week.

As a result, the match is being played at a crucial moment for both clubs as Liverpool look to increase their lead at the top of the table to nine points, while Everton look to put daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.

David Moyes worried about the gap between Liverpool and Everton

Both Merseyside clubs were top of the English game during the 80s but the paths they have taken since have been very different.

Liverpool have kicked on to become one of the most successful clubs in world football, while Everton have yet to experience silverware since 1995.

Nevertheless, it has always been competitive between the two clubs until recently, as the disastrous ownership of Farhad Moshiri has resulted in the Toffees fighting relegation for many years.

Ahead of the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, Moyes has admitted that the gap between Liverpool and Everton is the biggest it has been for a long time and that he hopes to close it over the coming years.

“I think the gap between the two teams at the moment is probably as big as it’s been for a long time,” the Everton boss told the press. “I have to try and bridge the gap and start bringing the two clubs closer together. I need to bring my club closer to their club if I can.”

Although there is a big gap between the two Merseyside clubs at present, Arne Slot is aware that Liverpool will face difficulties against Everton at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are another challenge the Dutch coach will look to overcome this season and the Liverpool boss has been receiving praise from Moyes ahead of Wednesday’s clash.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool team have impressed David Moyes

Liverpool are performing beyond many people’s expectations this season as the Reds were expected to struggle following the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

Moyes seems to have been one of those as the Everton boss has admitted that he is amazed by the ‘great job’ Slot has done at Anfield throughout the 2024/25 campaign so far.

“They had a fantastic coach in Jurgen Klopp who made Liverpool great for so many years,” Moyes told the media on Tuesday. “Most people will be amazed at just how well Arne Slot has done. He’s done a great job, done it very smoothly and he has got them playing well.”

The Dutch coach’s team are looking to bounce back from their FA Cup defeat to Plymouth on Sunday with victory at Everton, a result Jamie Carragher believes has helped Liverpool’s chances at Premier League success.

The Reds need a win a Goodison Park to ensure that they do not lose momentum heading into a crucial part of the season, but Everton under Moyes are certain to be a difficult task for Slot’s men.
