Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League have just gone up after ‘great day’

Liverpool have come under criticism following their disappointing exit against Plymouth Argyle.

A number of Reds players failed to impress on the south coast with Harvey Eliott earning criticism from Liverpool fans and Federico Chiesa being labelled ‘not good enough’.

Having fielded a so-called weaker team on the day, John Aldrige claims Arne Slot made a ‘mistake’ rotating his squad against the Championship side.

Micah Richards however has backed Slot’s decision to rest key players, suggesting that Liverpool have bigger things to think about it – something that has been echoed by former Reds captain Jamie Carragher.

Jamie Carragher claims FA Cup exit is ‘really good’ for Liverpool

Slot would have no doubt wanted to reach the next round of the FA Cup, but the Dutchman will also recognise the benefits of having fewer fixtures on the schedule.

This is something Carragher was keen to highlight on the Overlap, claiming the Plymouth defeat will actually boost Liverpool’s title chances.

“I looked at when Arsenal went out to United (in the FA Cup) and I was thinking that could be a problem because I thought we would go far in it. I actually think it was a great day all around. A great day for FA Cup, a giant-killing, great for Plymouth and I think it’s really good, decent for Liverpool.

“The way I looked at it, does that give Liverpool more chance of winning the league and I think in terms of percentages it probably does.”

Paul Scholes claims FA Cup exit may affect Liverpool ‘momentum’

With Carragher highlighting the benefits of an FA Cup exit, Paul Scholes suggested there may also be some negatives to consider – particularly around momentum.

“I agree with what you say Jamie about how probably it is a good thing but then you have to think about momentum. You lose and all of a sudden, there’s a little bit more pressure on you Wednesday and if you drop points on Wednesday that’ makes you think oh s—. It does put a little bit of pressure but like I say I think you’re probably better out of it.”

With four key games in just 15 days, Slot will be hoping his side’s FA Cup exit won’t affect their ‘momentum’ heading into a vital period of fixtures.
