There are very view players in Arne Slot’s squad that can play as an attacking midfielder and on the wing.

Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott are the two names that stand out when it comes to this type of versatilty and it seems that this is something Liverpool could address ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool are preparing for the summer transfer window as the Dutch coach looks to add some of his own players having inherited a very stong squad from Jurgen Klopp.

A left-back will the priority for Liverpool and a striker is another option should Darwin Nunez leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The Merseyside club have not been linked to many attacking midfielders in recent months, although one name has reared its head.

That was Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig and this summer, Liverpool could pounce on his unusual situation in Germany.

Liverpool are interested in RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons

Liverpool were ‘extremely keen’ on Simons last summer as it emerged that the Dutch talent would not be staying at Paris Saint-Germain.

The midifelder joined RB Leipzig on loan before the Germany club made the deal permanent during the latest transfer window.

Simons only signed a contract until 2027 and the reason for this is that the 21-year-old is expected to leave during the summer, reports Christian Falk for CaughtOffside’s The Daily Briefing.

“It’s looking likely that Leipzig will sell Xavi Simons in the summer transfer window. It was a little bit surprising that Leipzig committed to a permanent deal with Simons,” Falk stated in his column.

“At the beginning, they didn’t think they’d get this chance, but they did it for €50m, which isn’t a lot for this kind of player. His contract, of course, isn’t that long, running just until 2027. So, you see, his stock is rising!

“Leipzig are thinking they have signed a player for €50m who has the potential to be an €80m player, so they could earn a lot of money on a potential sale.

“I’m sure there’s a gentleman’s agreement or a release clause, which would see Simons sold in the summer. Liverpool are interested, as are Manchester City and Manchester United.

“Xavi Simons won’t stay at Leipzig for his whole career – but everyone already knows that! Leipzig had the chance because PSG were happy to sell as they can’t loan so many players in Europe (they’re only allowed six).”

£67m (€80m) is a lot for a player that is still very young and has not shown his full potential, however, it is a situation that Liverpool may pounce on.

Simons is an extremely talent young star and the Dutch talent is someone Arne Slot may be keen on as he looks to add another attacking midfield option to his list.

Where would Arne Slot fit Xavi Simons at Liverpool?

Simons is an attacking midfiedler, who can also play on the wing, and is known for his cretaive output with the RB Leipzig star producing five goals and four assists across 18 matches this season in Germany.

The logical spot that the 21-year-old may occupy is that of Dominik Szoboszlai, but given the recent form of the Hungarian, that is unlikely.

The Premier League leaders are unlikely to spend £67m on a player to back up its main stars, therefore, the Dutch coach could be used to replace Mohamed Salah should he leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

Liverpool fans will be happy to see some names linked to their club after two quiet windows, but it remains to be seen if Simons is a star that arrives at Anfield in 2025.
