Liverpool are yet to truly show their hand in the transfer market under a new recruitment regime.

Much had been expected of incoming sporting director Richard Hughes along with a team led by returning former transfer guru Michael Edwards.

However, with one transfer window under their belt at Liverpool so far, the new-look team have signed just two players, one of whom has headed off on-loan for the season.

As a result, supporters are still to see how Liverpool operate in a post-Jurgen Klopp world in the transfer market.

Klopp became increasingly influential in recruitment at Anfield over the years and many recent signings were players who he specifically wanted in the Liverpool squad.

With the former Liverpool manager set to take a new role with Red Bull in January, though, he is reportedly now set to try and stop a player from moving to Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp will be key to Xavi Simons transfer

There have been claims over recent times that Liverpool are keen to sign Xavi Simons from PSG next summer.

It has even been reported that Liverpool is a probable destination for Simons in the event that he does permanently leave the French club.

The Dutchman is of course currently on-loan at RB Leipzig for a second season running. And according to journalist Christian Falk, the German club would love to keep Simons. However, they cannot take him on-loan for a third year and cannot afford his likely £66m asking price.

As a result, Falk claims in his Fact Files column that Leipzig may rely on the powers of persuasion of Klopp to strike a deal with PSG and also convince Simons to stay in Leipzig.

“Interestingly for Leipzig, they now have a secret weapon in the form of former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp which they could potentially rely upon,” says the reporter.

“He’s starting his new role with Red Bull on January 1 and they hope that he’s the man who could persuade Simons to stay put. This will be the first challenge for Klopp in his new role.”

Liverpool convince Klopp to join Red Bull

It’s going to be fascinating to watch Klopp in a new role during 2025. While the 57-year-old has been out of work, it has still been easy to link him with Liverpool.

But once Jurgen has a new employer, he will be totally focused on doing right only by those clubs under his watch. That is going to be both a little sad and very interesting.

In the meantime, Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, has spoken out this week to share how Jurgen’s experiences with Red Bull while at Liverpool helped to inform his decision to join them.

“He simply appreciates the work that is done there, because he also transferred some players from Salzburg and Leipzig to Liverpool, who always fit perfectly into his game system,” Kosicke told BILD.

Simons seems like a player who could fit that description. Now it’ll be on Klopp to convince him to stay at Leipzig rather than going the other way. Let the battle commence, Jurgen!
