Eberechi Eze decision and two transfers Liverpool can agree on summer 2024 deadline day

Deadline day for the summer 2024 transfer window has arrived and Liverpool remain active in the market, so Rousing The Kop looks at three deals Arne Slot can still target.

The Reds left it late to agree their first signing of the summer with Giorgi Mamardashvili this week agreeing to leave Valencia for Liverpool. But the Georgia goalkeeper will not be a Reds player until July 2025 with the Anfield team agreeing to let him stay at Los Che another year.

One fresh face did arrive on Merseyside before deadline day, though, after Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus. The Premier League title-chasing side took advantage of the Italy winger entering the last year of his contract in Turin to snap Chiesa up in a bargain deal.

Instead, the exit door at the AXA Training Centre span far more regularly than the inbound door this summer. After Liverpool let Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip go at the end of their deals, Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg headlined the list of names finding new teams.

But new Liverpool head coach Slot and new sporting director Richard Hughes remain in the market for deals on deadline day at Liverpool. So, with that in mind, Rousing The Kop looks at three deals Liverpool can seal before the transfer window slams shut at 23:00 on Friday.

Liverpool are in talks to send Tyler Morton to Bayer Leverkusen

A bright future appeared likely for Tyler Morton on Merseyside but his career now looks set to unfold in Germany. Talks are ongoing between Liverpool and Bayern Leverkusen over the terms of Morton’s transfer, with a loan with an option or obligation to buy likely to be done.

Florian Plettenberg reports that Bayer Leverkusen turned their attention to Morton as they strive to replace Gustavo Puerta. Morton is also excited to get a chance to join the 2023/24 Bundesliga champions as it means working under manager and Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso.

A loan spell at the BayArena would mark the third straight season that Morton has spent at another team. Liverpool agreed to let their midfielder spend the 2022/23 term at Blackburn Rovers and then 2023/24 at Hull City. Morton also proved creative with both of those sides.

Morton offered Blackburn four assists with two in 40 Championship games before increasing that output to five assists, plus three goals, in 39 second-tier fixtures for Hull. Liverpool may hope that Alonso can now further grow Morton’s skills whilst on loan to Bayern Leverkusen.

Crystal Palace expect Liverpool to target Eberechi Eze’s transfer

The arrival of Chiesa on Merseyside may make a move less likely but Crystal Palace expect Liverpool to target Eberechi Eze’s transfer. The Eagles also fear Manchester City will come forward after showing an interest in his signature, which has been too expensive for Arsenal.

That is according to The Independent’s Reading the Game newsletter, which reports that the Selhurst Park side fear one top Premier League club will test their resolve. Despite the south London natives selling Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, Eze’s displays keep him on shortlists.

Since helping England reach the Euro 2024 final in Germany this summer, Eze has failed to score or create a goal in the Premier League. But the 26-year-old scored 11 and assisted four in 27 top-flight appearances last term, despite starting 24 games between suffering injuries.

Liverpool do not rule out a last-gasp transfer for Kostas Tsimikas

Like much of the summer transfer window this year, deadline day is likely to be more about the players leaving Liverpool rather than joining – including Kostas Tsimikas. His future with the Reds remains in doubt as the deadline approaches after starting his season as a backup.

Slot has so far favoured Andy Robertson to start at left-back in the Premier League and even left Tsimikas on the bench entirely against Brentford. He had played just 11 minutes away to Ipswich Town, as well, but the Greece star playing second-fiddle all season may be in doubt.

Journalist David Lynch has the ‘sneaky feeling’ that Tsimikas will leave Liverpool before the deadline. Those close to his camp are remaining tight-lipped about the 28-year-old’s future on Merseyside, where Tsimikas has a contract until 2027 but only played 13 times last term.

So, having gone from being used as a backup under Jurgen Klopp to being the No2 left-back at Liverpool under Slot, Tsimikas may decide that enough is enough and push for a deadline day transfer. But the Reds may be loath to lose a valuable squad player so late in the market.
