Liverpool have started talks to sell £20m player to Bayer Leverkusen and he wants to go

Liverpool have plenty of work to do over the next few days as they look to finalise their squad for the season.

The Reds have remained patient in the transfer window both in terms of incomings and outgoings as they looked to stabilised under Arne Slot.

However, the upshot of waiting is that moves are now having to be made very late on into the summer. Liverpool could yet make some signings, but there’ll certainly be movement the other way, too.

Some of that will be in terms of loan deals. It has been reported that Owen Beck is close to joining Blackburn Rovers and he won’t be the only one to secure a temporary switch.

As the clock runs down, it now looks likely that one of Beck’s academy teammates could even be on his way out of Anfield for good.

Tyler Morton in talks with Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool have already made a fair chunk of change out of the transfer market this summer. Bobby Clark, Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg were sold for a combined fee of around £62.5m.

It still looks like that might be added to, with the possibility that Joe Gomez could leave for relatively big money.

Another who could boost the Liverpool kitty is midfielder Tyler Morton. Morton has been expected to leave the Reds following a good season on-loan with Hull City.

And according to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, a move for the 21-year-old to join Bayer Leverkusen is in motion.

Reporting on X, Plettenberg says that Liverpool are in conversation with the Bundesliga champions over a loan transfer for Morton with a potential obligation to buy.

“To replace Gustavo Puerta, Bayer 04 Leverkusen now pushing to sign Tyler Morton,” says the reporter. “Negotiations with Liverpool today.

“Talks about a loan with an option/obligation to buy. 21 y/o midfielder is keen to join Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso.”

Loan move makes little sense for Liverpool

When Liverpool failed to sign Martin Zubimendi, there looked a possibility that Morton could stay at Anfield for another season.

Morton was even spotted wearing a new number during training, suggesting that he could hope to be part of the regular first-team squad.

As he has proven over the past two seasons, though, the England U21 international is too good to sit on the bench all year.

With clubs of the calibre of Leverkusen interested, Morton deserves his chance to go out and make good on his potential.

From a Liverpool point of view, however, a loan move makes little sense at this juncture. Their youngster’s stock is high right now and there have been suggestions that Morton could fetch around £20m.

While that figure could increase after another year, it feels Morton is at an age where he needs a permanent home. Get this changed to a full-blown transfer and let’s get on with it, Xabi.
