What Federico Chiesa has been doing at Liverpool after flying in to complete transfer from Juventus

Liverpool are closing in on their second signing of the summer transfer window.

The Reds have waited until late in the day to bring in any new players, preferring to take a patient approach to the market.

But, having signed Giorgi Mamardashvili and loaned him out to Valencia for the season, Liverpool have now agreed a deal for Federico Chiesa.

Chiesa is an opportunistic signing for Liverpool, one that was seemingly deemed too good to turn down. Although he doesn’t address a real need in the first-team squad, the Italian is a quality player.

And after Chiesa was spotted preparing to fly to Liverpool on Wednesday, Thursday morning has brought a new update on his movements.

What is going on with Federico Chiesa?

While Liverpool fans wait and see what squad number Chiesa will pick, the move is not quite over the line just yet.

Liverpool have been stung with these kinds of things in the not too distant past and supporters will not be celebrating quite for the moment.

Few will have forgotten the saga which saw Nabil Fekir conduct media duties as a new signing in 2018 before the plug was pulled on the deal. Nothing is done until it’s done.

Thankfully, it does sound like things are well on the way to being finalised.

That’s according to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, who says that the all important medical is taking place on Merseyside on Thursday morning.

“Federico Chiesa’s medical is ongoing this morning,” Thomas reports.

“Told the bonuses in the deal are predominantly dependent on Liverpool winning the Champions League and Premier League.”

Is there a danger Chiesa could fail his medical?

While medical tests can often be seen as a formality when completing a new signing, that is not always the case.

For example, Liverpool were linked with Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow earlier this summer. With the Reds ultimately staying out of it, Bijlow had agreed a move to Southampton.

However, according to Bijlow himself, the deal broke down at the last minute due to a problem with the 26-year-old’s medical.

Bijlow insists that he is in fact fully fit and the issue arose over a difference in opinion from the Southampton medical staff about how to treat an old injury.

For Chiesa, perhaps the biggest question mark over his move to Liverpool is whether he can stay fit. The Italy international has had a mixed time with injuries and that may add some pressure to the medical.

We wouldn’t expect any issues, though, and hopefully the official announcement will follow shortly.
