Liverpool added a vastly versatile threat to their attack by signing Federico Chiesa in August 2024 from Juventus, so here is everything that you need to know about him.

A chance to sign Chiesa at the close of the summer 2024 transfer window proved too strong for Liverpool to reject. He has made headlines across domestic and international football for years whilst providing a wealth of experience and versatility to the team that Chiesa plays in.

Chiesa has also seldom switched sides in his career having started in the youth ranks of ACF Fiorentina before joining Juventus in 2020. The transfer that saw Chiesa switch Florence for Turin was an initial two-year loan carrying an obligation to buy for a fee worth up to £54.5m.

Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa after he fell out of favour at Juventus

Juventus accepted a vastly reduced fee compared to what they paid Fiorentina for Chiesa as Liverpool signed the attacker in August 2024. After the forward entered the final year of his contract in Turin, the Bianconeri agreed to sell him for £10m rising to £12.5m after add-ons.

Chiesa also agreed to sign a four-year contract to join Liverpool as one of their first signings of the Arne Slot era on Merseyside. He even accepted the proposal of a move to the Premier League instantly after Thiago Motta left Chiesa out of the Juventus squad to start his tenure.

Motta omitted Chiesa from Juventus’ pre-season squad upon replacing Massimiliano Allegri at the helm owing to his contract situation. Without new terms, Liverpool even swooped to seal a deal to sign Chiesa from Juventus and bring in a highly respected player on the cheap.

So, with that in mind, Rousing The Kop has taken a look at everything that you need to know about Chiesa and what sort of player Liverpool signed from Juventus on August 29, 2024…

Who is Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa?

Federico Chiesa is a football player who joined Liverpool from Juventus in a deal worth up to £12.5m in August 2024. He initially cost the Reds £10m to sign after four years in Turin, with the add-ons included in the terms of his switch based primarily on the Reds’ performances.

Juventus had agreed to pay ACF Fiorentina up to £54.5m when they signed Chiesa back in October 2020. He initially cost the Bianconeri £2.5m to sign on loan for the 2020/21 term, plus a further £6.5m for the 21/22 season and then £36.5m to buy in 2022 before add-ons.

But Juventus only won the Copa Italia in 2020/21 and 2023/24, plus the Italian Super Cup in 2020/21, in return for their investment in Chiesa. Yet he did also help Italy win Euro 2020 as a vital cog in the Azzurri side that beat England on penalties in the final at Wembley in 2021.

Such was the impact that Chiesa made during Euro 2020 that the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) named him as the Italian Footballer of the Year for 2021. He won the public vote by a landslide with 46% of the 8,000 over Nicolo Barella (20%) and Leonardo Spinazzola (14%).

What position does Federico Chiesa play?

How good is Federico Chiesa? What’s been said about him?

Euro 2020 was arguably the peak of Chiesa’s career to date after missing nearly a full year of the forward’s career through 2022 with a cruciate ligament injury. He suffered a major knee injury as Juventus beat AS Roma 4-3 that January and did not recover until that November.

Some argue that Chiesa is still yet to recover the levels of his game that the winger achieved at Euro 2020 in 2021, as well. While he was physically able to play from November 2022, the attacker has struggled to recapture the best that Chiesa once had in the final third of a pitch.

Italy and Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon even admitted that Chiesa changed his mind after helping to orchestrate the Azzurri’s glory at Euro 2020. Before then, the iconic goalkeeper’s initial impression of Chiesa at Juventus was that he was not good enough for the top levels.

“When he arrived at Juve, I didn’t think he was so good,” Buffon told Gazzetta dello Sport. “I am honest. In the European Championship, he was unbelievable. In the final match with England, it was impossible to stop him.”

Chiesa even made Rio Ferdinand regret Manchester United not signing him from Fiorentina after they and Chelsea tried to rival Juventus. The Red Devils legend was in awe after seeing Chiesa deliver a Man of the Match display as Juve edged Chelsea in the Champions League.

“He’s a huge player and he’s been linked with a few clubs in England,” Ferdinand vented on BT Sport during September 2021, via quotes by the Metro. “I’m sure they’re thinking, ‘Why didn’t we get him?’.

“He’s just a fantastic footballer. The intensity with which he plays, we saw in the Euros he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament.

“It’s his pace, his drive. He’s the one who is the threat, he’s potent [and[ he wants to run in behind. He’s that modern-day striker who can play anywhere across the frontline and he’s as comfortable out wide as he is through the middle. He unnerves defenders with that pace.”

Federico Chiesa has been at the top of the domestic and international game for a number of years now. So, his net worth is also rather high with Chiesa estimated to have around £10m.
