What Barcelona think about their chances of signing Federico Chiesa after Liverpool enter race

Liverpool have already experienced the heartache of missing out on a top transfer target this summer.

The Reds had earmarked Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as the perfect player to strengthen their midfield.

Liverpool believed Zubimendi had given his word that he was ready to leave his boyhood club and move to Anfield.

However, following pressure from Real Sociedad, the Euro 2024 winner buckled and decided he’d rather stay at home.

Now, it has been claimed that Liverpool are pushing to sign another European Championship winner, Italy’s Federico Chiesa. But just like the path to Zubimendi, the road to sign Chiesa appears littered with potholes.

Barcelona still convinced they can sign Federico Chiesa

While the difficulties in signing Zubimendi arose from the 25-year-old not wanting to leave home, the problem is different in Chiesa’s case.

Unusually for an Italian perhaps, it has been claimed that Chiesa is keen on leaving Juventus and is in fact very excited about a move to Liverpool specifically.

Instead, the problem is that Barcelona are also seemingly very interested in capitalising on a cut-price dal to sign Chiesa.

It has been claimed that Chiesa could be available for around £10m and with Barcelona mired in financial difficulty, you can understand why that would appeal to them.

And according to Spanish outlet Sport, the Catalan giants remain ‘convinced’ that they will be able to bring the 26-year-old to Camp Nou and are relying on his patience.

They claim that despite Liverpool’s interest, Chiesa is actually ‘determined’ to make the move to Barca instead.

The only problem from their point of view then, is that they currently cannot even afford Chiesa’s paltry asking price and as things stand could not register the Italy international to play.

Nevertheless, Barca reportedly have a new deal with Nike in the offing and are waiting to see whether this – as well as some board intervention – can be enough to free up the funds to sign Chiesa.

Should Liverpool sign Chiesa?

If Chiesa is indeed putting a move to the cash-strapped circus that is Barcelona in 2024 above joining Liverpool, then the Reds should move on.

We’ve already had trouble with a player not wanting to join this summer and the last thing we need is to go all in on another who doesn’t want to be here.

Having said that, with time running out in the window, it doesn’t seem especially likely that Barca will free up the money needed to sign Chiesa, however ‘convinced’ they may be to the contrary.

If Liverpool stay in there, they should remain in the box seat financially. Whether Chiesa is worth holding on for is another matter.

Should the Juventus man eventually join Barca, the Reds would have other options. As per reports, Kingsley Coman is on Liverpool’s radar and he won’t be the only alternative being considered.
