What Federico Chiesa once said about Steven Gerrard as Liverpool make late move to sign him

It’s set to be a bumpy few days in the transfer window as Liverpool weigh up whether to make any moves.

The Reds are still yet to make a first-team signing this summer despite some areas of the team looking in need of improvement.

With just a few days left to go before the market shuts, though, Liverpool appear to have sprung into life.

On Monday, news came that the Reds are close to signing Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia before loaning him back to the Spanish side for the rest of the season.

And now, journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool have made a move to sign Juventus winger Federico Chiesa.

What Federico Chiesa said about Steven Gerrard

Chiesa has been a long-term target for Liverpool. Interest in the Italian dates way back to 2021, when the Reds reportedly bid £85m for Chiesa.

Fast forward four years, and it has been claimed that the 26-year-old is on the market for as little as £10m.

Clearly, that would be an absolute steal despite his various difficulties with injuries. In terms of squad depth for Arne Slot, Chiesa would be an incredible option.

Liverpool have not had the greatest of luck with Italian players over the years, with transfers for the likes of Mario Balotelli and Alberto Aquilani having fallen very flat in the past.

But Chiesa could be different. And if he does join, footage has emerged that will ingratiate the Italy international to Liverpool supporters immediately.

In a video of Chiesa shared by one fan on social media site X, the former Fiorentina is asked who he would rather have in his midfield out of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes.

“Stevie G,” smiles the Euro 2024 winner.

What’s going on with Liverpool and Federico Chiesa

After Fabrizio Romano’s initial report on Monday evening claimed that Liverpool have made ‘initial contact’ over a move for Chiesa, Reds fans have been waiting for updates.

So far, there has been nothing to confirm or deny the plausibility of a transfer.

On the face of it, it would look like another slightly strange move for Liverpool. It does nothing to address the current need for a defensive midfielder or a centre-back.

However, as a back-up across the forward line for a really low transfer fee, you can see the appeal of adding Chiesa to the Liverpool squad.

With so little time left in the transfer window, we’ll no doubt get a concrete confirmation or denial of this move in the very near future.
