Liverpool look likely to be busy in the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

The Reds have so far failed to make a single signing since Jurgen Klopp left the club. With the season set to start on Saturday, fans are growing nervous.

Whether Liverpool do eventually make any additions to the first-team squad could also have an impact on any outgoings at Anfield.

The Reds have been in the midst of selling off – or loaning – some of the talented players coming through their academy.

However, having been spotted wearing a new number during training on Thursday, it looks possible that one youngster may be about to avoid the cull.

Tyler Morton spotted wearing new number

One thing that virtually every Liverpool supporter wanted to see from their club this summer was the signing of a new defensive midfielder.

Liverpool tried to buy Martin Zubimendi in a clear indication that Arne Slot is not satisfied with the options currently at his disposal in the position.

But after the Reds failed in their efforts to lure the Spaniard to Merseyside, it has been claimed that Liverpool have no Zubimendi alternative.

As a result, the fact that Tyler Morton was sporting a brand new squad number this week is very interesting indeed.

Morton was in talks with RB Leipzig earlier in the summer, with The Times claiming that Liverpool would ask for £20m to sell the midfielder.

Following the Reds’ failure to land a target in his position, though, we think that Morton may now have been earmarked for a place in Slot’s squad.

Previously wearing 80 whenever he has played or trained with the Liverpool first-team, the 21-year-old was seen with kit emblazoned with Fabio Carvalho’s old number 28 on Thursday.

It could mean nothing, of course, but we’d suggest that Zubimendi’s rejection, Liverpool’s insistence that they won’t go after anyone else and now Tyler being upgraded paint a pretty clear picture.

Tyler Morton stay is good news for Liverpool

There may be a few groans from people about this, but would actually be delighted to see Morton stay and be given a chance.

The England U21 international had a really good season with Hull last time out and now looks ready to be considered for Liverpool.

Morton has a bit of Adam Wharton about him and if the Reds sell him on, they could live to regret it.

Jarell Quansah benefitted from Liverpool’s decision not to sign a new centre-half last year even though plenty thought they needed one. It isn’t a huge stretch to say that Morton could be set to reap the same rewards.

Obviously, we should wait on an official announcement for this before drawing concrete conclusions. But if that does arrive, then we can surely put any ideas about signing another No.6 in the bin.
