All eyes are on the transfer window for Liverpool as they remain without a signing this summer.

Time is running out for the Reds to do some business and avoid becoming just the second team in Premier League history to spend nothing in the off-season.

There is work being done it seems. Liverpool are closing in on Giorgi Mamardashvili before sending him back on-loan to current club Valencia.

Beyond that, plenty of supporters would like to see some additions who could bolster the first-team squad right away.

Defence and midfield are two areas of the pitch Liverpool look like they could do with some more fire power in. But, according to journalist David Ornstein, the new blood may come from the academy, rather than the transfer window.

Trey Nyoni set for first-team chance

After it emerged that Liverpool had no alternative to Martin Zubimendi in terms of a midfield signing, Arne Slot looked in danger of selling himself short this season.

Liverpool’s lack of a top-class defensive midfielder cost Jurgen Klopp last term and with the same group of players – minus Thiago Alcantara – heading into this one, there’s no reason that would change for Slot.

But while supporters clamour for a new signing, it seems that the new head coach may actually have one more option to pick from after all.

As Tyler Morton prepares to be sold and Liverpool weigh up a loan move for Stefan Bajcetic, Ornstein has claimed that young Trey Nyoni is likely to play a part in the first-team this season.

Nyoni was brilliant in pre-season and speaking on The Overlap, the journalist says that he’s set to get his chance under Slot.

“You talk about that position [midfield] and there is a player there, Trey Nyoni, who came from Leicester as a young boy,” says Ornstein.

“He has really impressed in pre-season and with Leicester in particular, so he will probably get minutes in there.

“Liverpool are a club who hand genuine opportunities to young players. Liverpool seem committed to giving that opportunity.”

Is Trey Nyoni ready for Liverpool step up?

If Liverpool fans were not aware of Nyoni before this summer, then they certainly are now. The 17-year-old burst onto the scene in really impressive fashion.

Supporters likened Nyoni to Paul Pogba after the opening friendly of the summer against Real Betis and the midfielder went from strength to strength from there.

The friendlies concluded with Nyoni burying a wonderful finish in-front of the Kop against Sevilla and anyone who was there that day will tell you he looks ready for the first-team.

Nevertheless, given that Slot has identified his position as an area that Liverpool need to upgrade in, it is a lot to put on Nyoni’s young shoulders.

Clearly, there are others ahead of him in the pecking order, but don’t be surprised if the former Leicester prospect quickly starts to jump the queue.
