£50m player is happy to leave Liverpool with insiders wanting him upgraded

Although they’re struggling to get a foothold in the market this summer, it seems that Liverpool are far from being finished.

The Reds are still yet to sign a player and are running the risk of being one of the only teams ever to go through a full window without an addition.

Having come up short under Jurgen Klopp last season, failure to add to the Liverpool squad would rightly be seen as a catastrophic failure by the Reds new-look recruitment team.

It would also mean that Arne Slot would be starting from a place of supporters being a little disillusioned before the season had even really begun.

As a result, it’s vital that Liverpool make at least one or two strong additions before August the 30th. In order to do that, though, someone may need to be moved on. And insiders at Anfield have seemingly identified a candidate.

Liverpool want Luis Diaz upgrade

Liverpool have already brought in some significant money this summer by selling Fabio Carvalho to Brentford.

However, Carvalho’s sale was not done with making a direct improvement to the Liverpool squad in mind. The 21-year-old had not been a part of the group for 12 months. He’s unlikely to be replaced.

If the Reds want to ensure they’re in a better place than last season, then, the best way to do that is by upgrading on their best XI.

Although some may debate this, we’d argue that for now, Luis Diaz is still very much a part of Liverpool’s starting team. The Colombian underlined that with two goals at Anfield on Sunday.

However, rumours that Diaz could leave Liverpool have been rumbling all summer long. And according to journalist David Lynch, insiders for the Reds are still ‘open’ to seeing the 27-year-old go.

“I very much get the impression from Liverpool sources that they’re very much open to the idea of moving him on,” Lynch tells Anfield Agenda. “I just think they think they can upgrade in output on the left-hand side.

“I think there’s an openness from Liverpool’s side to sell him and they feel there are targets out there who they could replace him with,” adds the reporter.

“Anthony Gordon being the absolute obvious one who I’ve no doubt they would go in for.

“But I also think there’s a willingness on the player’s side and I do wonder whether the story that came out today [that Diaz was joining Man City] possibly came from the player’s side on the basis that they’re trying to drum up the market for him, trying to kick Barcelona’s backside into gear a little bit to get that bid in.”

Liverpool should keep Luis Diaz

Although there are question marks over Diaz’s output in terms of goals especially, it shouldn’t be taken as a given that Liverpool can do better.

Take Gordon, for example. The 23-year-old is often seen as a dream signing in attack for the Reds. Gordon is keen to join Liverpool and a lot of fans would now take him over Diaz in a heartbeat.

Despite that, if you compare the former Everton man’s goal record to Liverpool’s No.7, then there’s no evidence Liverpool would be a greater goal threat with Gordon in the team.

Last season, Gordon scored 12 times in 48 games for Newcastle. Diaz got 13 in 51. The season before it was seven in 36 at Everton and Newcastle for the Scouser and five in 21 for Lucho.

Granted, Gordon is four years younger than Diaz and can improve. But, for the moment, we’re still happy to stick with our £50m man. In fact, we get the feeling he’s about to have a special season. Watch this space.
